I can't really say about the intravee as I didn't really look into it. Folks with nav screens refer it and I'm sure Sombody with one can give opinion. As I only have the business unit then I was more than happy with the Dension. You can see it in action on YouTube, several videos.

The Intravee integration into the Nav is second to none, and as a gateway device, it is very flexible. Theoretically you can connect any Ai-net device to it, and additional units via a bridge. Actual iPod control isn't from the Intravee, but the Alpine box you attach to it

The one thing a lot of us like is the extras features it provides talking to the cars systems. 3 blink indicators for instance, which cannot be programmed on a pre facelift car.

Sadly the inventor of the Intravee died recently and the future of this amazing gadget is in doubt.

As I said I used to use a Dension but PVR was an advocate of the Intravee. When I changed my car it was a now or never situation, if I had of fitted the Dension it would have stayed fitted. I bought one for £150 and sold my Dension for £75 so was a cheap upgrade. If you dont have nav it's not worth getting and will be hard to use. however if you have nav it's a great bit of kit.

List below of extra Intravee features

I'm quickly coming to the conclusion that the intravee is the way to go. I can see me spending money on a dension and then in a year changing to an intravee. I'm a bit of a sucker for a gadget anyway. I reckon I could pick up a 2nd hand alpine Ipod kca-420i and ipod classic on ebay pretty cheaply.
Will any gen ipod be ok?

I don't think there will be a problem - mine has worked with an iphone 3GS, ipod touch, ipod 2G, ipod nano and now iphone 4S. With the ipods there is an issue with 'sleeping' after a period of inactivity, although there is a fix. look at this thread for more details.
