I read the Helene Sports filter is good , cant find a supplier anymore as it looks like they were bought out , any links ?? If anyone is running other makes would love to know your experience of noise, power etc if any?

i have a green cotton , no power gain to speak of really a little noise to be honest i think if you look the oem one is a really good one im going back to one , just my opinion though
I did quite a bit of research into this. Turns out the OEM airbox works very well as it is. So if you're doing it for power don't bother. However if you are doing it for noise its very well worth while. It does sound very good.
GruppeM seem to have good results on the dyno too. Also Exdos on here did some datalogging and surprisingly found an improvement with the GruppeM over the OEM

i suppose you have to do quite a lot to your exhaust system, fuel supply and perhaps even the engine head before the oem air filter becomes a limiting factor in performance alone....
a decent replacement panel in the air box would probably be the best cost/benefit option unless you're bothered about the sound.

As Mark says Exdos has done a lot of research into the whole issue of air/gas flow into and out of the engine.
I suspect that if you mod the exhaust to give better flow away from the engine and do mods to improve air flow into engine ( high flow filter, RPI scoop, change or mod airbox) then you may need to remap engine to get the most from your mods.
To be fair though Exdos claims massive BHP gains without remapping after the above mods and he seems to be genuine in his belief.

Very little power gain to be had from a filter. GruppeM meant to be the best.
Any filter that removes the box will give more noise, and I doubt it any power will be lost due to heat soak once you're doing over 40mph. I have nothing to prove any of this, just my guess from experience.

Run a K&N in mine & as per the opinion on here, can't notice any power increase whatsoever. Only comment I would have is in the 8k it's covered since last summer, still feels to suck in as much air in terms of response as the day it was fitted, though will be the last I get

I fitted a K&N to my last Golf on the promise of more power and better fuel economy. BS! Less fuel economy by a couple of mpg, but breathed much better. Smoother acceleration when pushing really hard.
Apart from oil and routine checks, I've not done anything under the bonnet with #69, mostly because
I wouldn't know what to buy. So much is non standard
