Benefits of run flats...

Having just been to the local stealers for a quote on service 2, i had a quick google on current run flat tyre prices....

One link took me to BMW's own tyre page and it seems like the main reason for having run flat tyres is to eliminate the need to stop ....

and i quote....

"whilst in unpleasant surroundings."

If ever there was a better way of saying 'sh!t neighbourhood' I have yet to see it.

BMW... making sure you only break down in nice places

The idea works for me...

..if only the ride wasn't quite so crap, they didn't break alloys, and they were cheaper!

I had tyre insurance on mine as part of the deal when I bought the car so I'm keeping them if only for that reason alone.
Can't say it bothers me too much having them. I think I would rather know I can still drive home if I get a puncture.

Saying that, I've never driven a zed without them (apart from my Z3) so can't compare really.

I'll stick with the RFT's while the insurance is valid.

That's very funny :D

I've recently changed to non-RFTs, great experience. If I have a bad experience with a puncture in 'unpleasant surroundings' then I may be tempted to change back...

If its like the insurance I had then as you say it's "tyre insurance" so you can claim with non run flats as well, which is exactly what I did two months after ditching the run flats for 452's and picking up a puncture.

just a quick question ? if run flats are so good - why doesn,t F1 use them ? or rallye ? or even track boys? their pants ! i hated them , but saying that yes they give you an option of driving on from an unpleasant place but if your changing the tyre , well you have a tyre iron in your hand ! personally i think they are crap , ive had 2 punctures in my driving life one catastrophic in my tt the other in the z , 2 in 26 years i will go with those odds everyday , saying that ! bet i get a flat tomorrow and will be bitching on your here ! now rubbing my whole body with wood !

Depends on what you want them for.

They're amazing for the average motorist who these days probably (a) wouldn't be able to feel the difference in handling when one tyre was so flat it was off the rim, and (b) they wouldn't have a clue how to change that tyre anyway at the roadside anyway. Means they can continue on in their blissful merry way without having to worry that they're car is actually safe.
And it means BMW don't need to supply a spare wheel, making the registered vehicle weight lighter. Lots of little things like that add up to creeping it into lower tax and emissions brackets etc. (That's why some spare wheels are now accessories with some manufacturers - that and cos it's sneaky way to add an extra cost).

I think you might be missing the point of run flats in your comparison. I don't think they really need to travel 50 miles safely home in their F1 car do they? They're for every day use by average Joe, not specialist use such as you example above.

We don't recommend run-flats. They ruin the ride, transmit more shock to the wheels and have undesirable effects on the steering, grip and handling. And we've seen people driving around with a hole in the sidewall you could put your fist through, entirely oblivious to the fact.

Yes M cars come with normal tyres 8)

I agree with the above, but I understand that run-flats are potentially safer if you suffer a high speed blow out, maintaining more control over the car?

Cheers :)

Put a holts flat spray canister in the boot, it fits perfectly under the floor behind the battery :-)
Yeah - and you can always use it instead of CS gas if you break down 'in unpleasant surroundings'... :D
