I would have been on here a little sooner but it’s taken me a week to get a photo on!

Picked up my Zed last week and promptly drove over 300 miles home in torrential rain with snow storms chasing me – yes I was on the M25 on Thursday as well. Photo is from the following morning.

Next long trip will most likely be up to Durham in a few weeks time to get the motor for the soft top moved into the boot – must have taken gallons of water on board during the trip home and suspect not all of it flowed straight through that small drain – but I had a fixed grin all the way! :D

The Zed joins my Caterham 7 (and other classics) as a more refined (less screaming than the 7) top down car for daily driving replacing my Focus RS.

I’ve got loads of questions about retro fitting items so will be back soon.

 
Hi and welcome! Looks a lovely motor there, what engine is it?
Any info and pics of your classics from a fellow classic car fan?

Found a pic of the Caterham. Also have a 1971 mk3 mini; my airportable Landrover and a Scammell Handyman in various states of repair and a 38 Wraith for very special occasions.

My wife sat in that for about 3 hours!! Still I presume you had a good time fiddling with just about anything and everything in the cabin getting it just right? Air con, seat, etc.

I got onto the M25 around 14:00 and managed to keep moving all the way - made at least 40mph through the section I did from the M4 to the M11.

The Zed felt quite stable in the wet even with run-flats and I was very impressed with the fuel consumption given that apart from the M25 I did a steady 70mph for the rest of the trip.

To do soon plans are: hood motor into the boot; sound system - I've got the business radio head but no CD changer fitted or aux socket - might run my ipod into the cd socket via one of those little boxes (yes dead technical I know); check the heated seats - I have the switches mounted in front of the seat controls looks quite neat but not standard any one else got this?; hard top for winter; think about changing the run-flats.

Marlon - beech nuts blown down by the storm - they find their way into all parts of car engine bays and drain channels - a right pain.
 
I'd say definitely ditch the run flats, I did straight away and was such a great improvement.
 
Yea, its the tram-lining that spoils it although in the rain and snow I found the Zed far more measured than my old RS which was front wheel drive had loads of torque steer and was skittery if it even saw a white line in the wet.

Generally stable unless you hit a pot hole! I think the non-runflats improve the handling and overall drive/comfort. Tracking may also play a part so maybe one for the 'to-do list'

Mine came with a parrot bluetooth hands free system. Allows me to connect ipod (cable) and or use iphone via bluetooth... really good IMO.

Here you are Kis - just been out in the dark and cold.



The heated seat switch is the one on the right of the photo - front of the seat moulding. I think that all seats have some form of cover/cap/closed plastic grommet in this position. I guess that someone thought this was an easer fit than the centre console - unless this position is standard on other BMW's (this is my first) and the seats have just been swapped into my Z4 - they are Z4 pattern seats though.

I have not seen the heated sear switch there before. Normally a 3-heat setting switch by the ashtray.

For what it's worth I don't subscribe to the view that the roof motor should be moved into the boot as preventative maintenance. I frequently check my drain holes and in nearly 3 years of ownership I haven't had an issue. That is with the car outside on most days whatever the weather (but inside at night). The vast majority of the folk on here have there motors where BMW put them.

I had heated seats retro-fitted and could have gone down the route of a switch on the seats but decided to replace my centre switch console with one with heated buttons (£78) plus the additional cost of the wiring loom and labour. I guess your seat button has the same result - a heated behind, and thats what matters :thumbsup:
