Being spied on by your computer

I've just joined BT Broadband and as part of the deal, I get BT Sport. I've switched on the Brugge v Man Utd match, and looking through the Settings in the screen, I'm asked if I'll allow my Mac's microphone and camera to be used. I've never come across anything like this before. So I'm wondering, besides the likes of Skype, how many other applications actually use your PC/Mac's camera and microphone with or without your knowing and why should the likes of BT Sport wish to spy on their customers?

I can see I'm going to have to start wearing clothes in the house! :P

Always worth keeping the camera covered if not using.

I thought it was just me doing that. Even at work on Lync / Skype calls the camera is covered up just incase the other person sees my facial expressions as I visibly groan but keep my voice professional. They say there are no stupid questions, but a lot of inquisitive idiots!

Coverup here as well. Only one I can't cover without putting a sticker on it is my macbook.

mj2k - I have met you - keep it covered

Hole punch (remember those!) on the sticky part of a post it note, perfect!

Harsh PVR, harsh...don't your driving clogs need a varnish instead of dishing abuse

The green light comes on when my macbook pro camera is in use. Surely they cant get around that as well? I do often shut the lid though when not in use!

Yeah, you can bypass that light if you control the camera at low level.

I've never covered the camera on any of mine - anyone spying on me will soon switch off :D

The BT Sport thing may simply be for interactive features, so for example taking part in a live discussion session where they have a videoconference with fans - think X Factor phone-ins. Or recorded messages to play on air. You'd have to initiate it I think, though to be sure you need to be reading T&Cs.

I don't trust BT as far as I can throw them. From my experience they're a bunch of underhanded crooks screwing their customers.

I've been watching you for months :o

And been in therapy for the same duration

And we have to go in therapy due to the thought of you spying on Bing ...

nice piece of electrical tape over the webcam on my macbook.

It's refreshing to know I'm not alone there!

Move the laptop a bit please, getting bored with looking at that wedding picture behind you.

Best read the T&Cs then... I worked for BT for 17 years - I didn't come across many underhanded crooks, and sadly never got the opportunity to screw a customer :D

My comments relate to the top management, consider yourself blameless (unless you were top management). 8)
