Being fat considered a disability?

Trust me it's the food producers causing much of this inclination to put on weight. I'm constantly amazed the number of times when I visit various food producers and lo and behold there is the obligatory tanker delivering liquid sugar somewhere within their plant. It's also criminal how we are being told certain foods are "good" for you when in reality they most definitely are not!

I'm not sure being overweight is as genetic as some people think. An old pal of mine, who's around my height 5ft 8", used to weigh easily 20 stone (maybe 25). He was always a big lad. From age 5.

He wanted to join the police but had no chance of passing the fitness test. So, over a year he changed his diet, started running 4-5 days a week and became much more active.

Now he must be around the 11stone mark, enjoys a healthy active life as a policeman, and looks line a totally different guy.

Losing weight isn't easy, I understand that. But with hard work and serious lifestyle changes it's definitely possible

X2, genetics account for around 5% of obesity cases. obviously there are also examples of medication, for other conditions that can cause weight gain as a side effect.

I'm not suggesting it is the case with anybody here, but I love the Secret Eaters show. Sometimes it's an education issue, people don't realise what they are eating or what the issue is.

Regardless of opinions about whether being fat is self induced or not .......

Have a wee look at the rest of Europe where there is no NHS and its private insurance ........
Do you smoke .......... higher premium or refusal
Do you drink ............ higher premium or refusal
Are you over weight ........... higher premium or refusal

Has one of these conditions occurred since you initiated the policy and you have failed to disclose it ........policy null and void.

That just about sums it up really :D

I must admit I have very strong views on health, diet (i.e what you eat 365 days a year, not some fad weight loss idea) and obesity. I will keep them mostly to myself as they'd likely get me banned

All I will say is the vast majority of people would benefit by reading some real literature on food, (not cookbooks!) studies on related diseases etc, and even better understand why you eat what you eat and what the implications for eating this way are. Since the 1940's big business, governments and £££ agendas have had more than a guiding hand in defining to your grandparents, your parents and even you from childhood what you should eat, how much of it, and the 'benefits' of eating / drinking what they say. Indoctrinating generations on the virtues of milk, calcium and strong bones/teeth. How protein from meat is better than protein from vegetables, legumes and nuts. How fats are bad but carbs are ok. How carbs are bad but fat is ok. Food pyramids.

The 1992 food pyramid, with the main group being high energy refined carbs. Dairy even gets its own, government approved section.

There are many very well written, peer reviewed and (seemingly) agenda-less books covering this topic that should help get people thinking. Some very good examples below;

The China Study: http://www.amazon.co.uk/China-Study-Comprehensive-Nutrition-Implications/dp/1932100660/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1419028185&sr=1-1&keywords=%27the+china+study%27

The Engine 2 Diet: http://www.amazon.co.uk/The-Engine-Diet-Firefighters-Save-Your-Life/dp/0446506699/ref=pd_sim_b_6?ie=UTF8&refRID=0RR3J00VM19CE7AAQ3EN

Nothing is more important in promoting health than the food you eat. There are so many proven links between food and disease, yet instant gratification, price point and most ignorance (is bliss) mean most people don't even want to listen to the facts and are happy eating what they like when they like.

Studies suggest around 65% of the human population is lactose intolerant / has a reduced ability to digest the lactose leading to a number of side effects and discomforts. But do most people eat dairy in every meal? Yes. Honestly its in damn near everything. Look at the labels on most any foods, prepared meals etc and its likely to have some form of dairy product in it. Good for the dairy business though

People need to be accountable for themselves. The population is getting sicker, and fatter, regardless which came first the cost to the NHS and therefore the population is going to continue to increase. I for one don't see why the rising costs for self-inflicted health issues should be footed by everyone.
Private healthcare is a better model than universal healthcare for healthy people in an unhealthy society.
Universal healthcare is a better model than private healthcare for unhealthy people that would not be able to get private cover due to smoking, drinking, drugs, obesity etc.

In the UK, 67% of men and 57% of women are either overweight or obese, according to the Global Burden of Disease study. (source: http://www.theguardian.com/society/2014/may/29/uk-western-europe-obesity-study)
When the majority of a population are unhealthy, universal healthcare will run out of money, as it has, and become unsustainable.

If people want to smoke, do drugs or gorge themselves on deep fried Mars bars until they get a blue badge and a mobility scooter, go to town, indulge, enjoy yourself if that's what makes you tick. But why should anyone else have to pay for your treatment?

I'm really fat and I can still fit in my Z..

I never go over my daily allowances for food, beer or whatever and I'm still FAF..

I have an active job and haven't been in hospital for over 20 years.

Some people are fat some are thin, its down to genetics IMHO

I disagree. A bit of fat maybe, but not the obese looking characters you usually see walking around the shops of a weekend, filling their trolleys up with crisps, cheap frozen food and copius amounts of own brand cola.

Agreed..

If your gonna eat s**t 24/7 then your gonna be fat.

Some fat people don't eat unhealthily all day but they are still fat... Some thin people eat crap and junk food 24/7 but are still thin..

It's just the cards you're dealt

Cue the endless fat tossers claiming disability benefit if/when a fat law gets passed.

I'm a fat bas**rd - wanna smack in the mouth?
:D

You'd have to catch me first, and being fat, I don't think you stand a chance. :P
I'm actually 6'1" and 13 stone. A cat 2 cyclist and marthon runner. I left the post as a poke to remind you that your comments might have offended some other forum members........you definitely wouldn't want me to catch you - which I think would be a certainty. Please think before you post such inflammatory remarks in future.

Ben, shove a stick in his spokes and run like hell

I needn't comment on the meat of this thread beyond saying that I see daily the consequences of the steadily increasing broad social acceptance of unhealthy eating and obesity. Suffice it to say, I'm not going to be unemployed any time soon  (although the number of patients deemed not medically fit for arthroplasty surgery is increasing too, as are the rates of complications following surgery). I've observed an increase in patients who are obese yet malnourished. This seems to correlate with areas of relative social deprivation where education is perhaps somewhat wanting.

Cat 2 cyclist you say? Yep, definitely a lycra clad terrorist who would s**t themselves if a car overtook them and throw their arms around like a lunatic.

Stop throwing a hissy fit you big girl. While you're at it, can you pick up the dummy you spat out, please.

:D Just a comment ........

I know a girl who constantly complains that diets do not work for her, and that she only eats healthy food ..... fair enough.

..... but she is just 5ft 2 inches and after spending a bit of time with her it was obvious that she eats about 4 times what I eat
in a day, and I'm an active 5ft 9 inch male ........ and I'm not kidding, ordered Chinese once ...... I could only eat about half of my meal, then I was full to bursting ..... lol she then not only eat all of hers, but then proceeded to finish off what I had left, and then went looking for desert.

Its not entirely about what you eat .......... its about the volume you eat.
Spent some time in Biafra many years ago during the war ........ people were eating absolute shite, anything they could find ...... never once saw an overweight person ........ and on the same note, the camps in Germany were not known for their cuisine either ..... and I've yet to see a single picture of a fat inmate from the time :tumbleweed:

What a stupid thing to say.........

Prisoners in POW camps and the people of Biafra died through lack of food.Im sure either would have loved to be have been fat..
