Being fat considered a disability?

We are all influenced by our environment and whilst it might seem relatively easy to assume that self management will conquer being over-weight there are many contributory factors that are not even mentioned here. . . .

Have you walked down your town centre streets - money lenders/fast food joint/charity shop/money lenders/fast foodjoint/charity shop/food joint/food joint etc etc

So many beautiful slim people encouraging us in all manner of advertising to eat/drink the latest convenience/fad/unhealthy food to achieve happiness

Many folk unable to cook effectively. . . .

The cost of food stuff - cheap food not always the best food

The economy and industry putting profit before health

Whilst I agree with the general consensus that it's up to each of us to do our best to keep ourselves relatively fit and well, at what point do we start determining what people should do. How many of us drink/smoke/drive fast/take risks. . .do we turn road traffic accident victims away because they have modified a Zed and therefore shown a lack of the 'right' kind of decision making?

Simple solutions offered to a very complex situation - in my experience if you are not sufficiently well enough to have surgery or treatment you won't get it until you are. . . .

Quite the most nonsensical thread I've read in a while. MMM-5, I love you inclusion of Pregnancy, as a self inflicted injury. :o

As for fat people. Rejoice the UK, is finally a world leader at something again.

Well, it's entirely optional, easily preventable, and is a drain on finances - just like obesity (and you get fat with both) :P

I'm just cynical as I've seen plenty of female relatives give up a decent job (i.e. not minimum wage, not working outside in all weathers) to have a child at 20-odd. Then they moan that they can't afford the 1-3 month's deposit on a house/flat that the council is paying for and ask everyone else to help out. Then they decide they can spend £50 on a bottle of poncey vodka (Ciroc or something at the moment) that they're only going to mix with cola anyway :x

I've been in work since I left school at 16, been through YTS, City & Guilds and then took whatever jobs the recruitment agencies offered. I finally lucked into something I was good at and that I enjoyed and I've been doing that for the last 25 years (with the odd 1-9 months off when the markets sour).

I don't claim benefits, I pay lots of National Insurance, and the only thing I've claimed for is when I've been to the minor injuries clinic when I fell down some stairs (someone had left a shoe on the 2nd step down). Even the minor injuries I've had when skiing have been paid for out of my own pocket, or by winter sports insurance.

Can I have my refund now please :?

I'm really fat and I can still fit in my Z..

I never go over my daily allowances for food, beer or whatever and I'm still FAF..

I have an active job and haven't been in hospital for over 20 years.

Some people are fat some are thin, its down to genetics IMHO

Similar. I have had two major calls on the medical profession, once for broken metatarsals (all 10, across both feet) after falling down a mountain (no, not a humpty dumpty moment :)), and once for repairing a buggered knee (rugby injury). I have had zero days off ill over the past 10 years, eat healthily (am also vegetarian), exercise regularly (4 days a week in the gym for 2-3 hours a time), very active... and still FAF, with a high BMI. Oh, and drink alcohol very rarely. Hardly a drain on the medical profession, and still fit in a zed.

However, if (god forbid) I became disabled, I would be subject to the same generalisation we see in this thread...

Being of the HUGH size, I was reading this post getting more and more pi$$ed off. If you have never been FAT, then you don't have any clue as to what it is like to be fat. I just happen to know what it is like. My whole family suffers from being fat. Is it a disease? I say yes. Why? you may ask. I don't know why it affects some and not others. For instance, my Dad and Mom were not fat, but my grandmother was very fat and my grandfather wasn't at all, both were my Dad's parents. My Mom's parents, same thing. My brother's kids are skinny as well. So go figure out how the 5 kids my parents had was afflicted with obesity.
Now as far as being able to fit into the Z, yes fat people can fit in. I am 5'9" and at my heaviest owning a Z, I was 460lbs. Yes, I was much bigger before that. So, fat people can fit into a Z relatively comfortable and not feel like you are driving a fiat. I won't say what I eat, but mostly it is home cooked with the occasional fast food stop.
As far as the topic of this thread "Being fat considered a disability?" There are some instances which had been pointed out where the answer would be yes, but for the most part, no in my opinion. I was at one point where I was disabled and I weighed almost 600 lbs. My disability was not "because" I was fat, it was due to me being fat. I had arthritis in my knees and I could barely walk. They have both been replaced now. Also with that said, I know of a person that has 1 1/2 arms, she lost half of her arm and she is considered disabled. My question is why that is. She can walk a distance. She has 2 good legs.
So for all of you skinny people that can't seem to gain weight, as they say, "walk a ,mile in my shoes before you critizise"
Now as far as losing the weight. I have had stomach surgery which nearly cost me my life because society deems that I should to look like YOU!!!!!! so, ---- off!

Hey I mean no offence or any insults to you but wouldn’t the addiction to food be the disease? But then addiction affects smokers and drug addicts should they all be considered to have diseases?

Once again not trying to cause any offence or insults and I wish you all the best.

I'm not sure being overweight is as genetic as some people think. An old pal of mine, who's around my height 5ft 8", used to weigh easily 20 stone (maybe 25). He was always a big lad. From age 5.

He wanted to join the police but had no chance of passing the fitness test. So, over a year he changed his diet, started running 4-5 days a week and became much more active.

Now he must be around the 11stone mark, enjoys a healthy active life as a policeman, and looks line a totally different guy.

Losing weight isn't easy, I understand that. But with hard work and serious lifestyle changes it's definitely possible

But when obese people are fitted with a gastric band they lose weight. If they ate less without the gastric band they would lose weight. If you gain fat without putting more energy in than you are using then you should be in the science museum because you have defeated the first law of thermodynamics and possibly solved the worlds energy crisis.

WTF is "BMI" or cholesterol? :?

I'm 6" and 9 stone 6 pounds [on a good day].

I eat what I like, when I like, but can't put on weight.

I'm not under weight, I'm over tall ....

Oh yea... Agreed..

I can lose weight if i want to,but have to eat a very low fat diet.... So,i have to eat soup and salads,i am pretty much a vegetarian anyway and very very rarely eat fried food..

My dad is like a whippet but eats like a shire horse,my mum is fat but eats like a bird...

Some peoples dietary system doesnt convert fatty foods fast enough and it just sits in the body....

My doctor who was also a family friend gave me some pills many years ago. They where new at the time and i think you could only take them for 9 months maximum. They converted any fat in your food and put it straight into your bowel,it made your poo like melted oranges but weight dropped off me.

Lost 5 stone in 9 months....on an extremely low fat diet with the aid of the pills..I then when to a dietician to analyse where i could better my diet to stay at a lower weight.
Basically my diet was good apart from lack of fruit (which i cant stomach)....Gradually over the years the weight crept back as predicted by the dietician....
Im just preordained to be a flag cracker...

But.... on my yearly health check,my blood pressure is superb,as is my cholesterol count and it has been for many years. This is despite the doctor reaching for the "diabetes leaflets" every time i waddle into the surgery for my yearly MOT...

Thats like saying if you chopped your legs off you would weigh less....

If you have to have surgery to make your stomach so tiny that its the only way to maintain weight, does that not indicate there is something wrong ?

Gastric band is a work around to a underlying problem, whatever that may be..

There's one or two folk that posted on this thread that are very lucky. . . . .

In 32 years at work, I had 2 lots of 3 day flu off (I mean in bed!) that is all, no hospitals, no tablets and no other illness. Like you I was active, fit and healthy and at my fighting weight.

Collapsed 8 years ago at 49 years of age - completely out the blue - Cardio Myopathy and at the moment cannot be cured. Like you I thought I was invincible, that training 3 or more times a week was an investment - it felt brilliant to be so fit!

Not wishing you any harm whatsoever but arguing your case because you live a particular lifestyle means nothing - you never know what's around the corner and it's then that you start to understand what it's like for others.

Nothing wrong in being as fit and well as you can be though. . . .

:driving:

Sorry to hear that Paul....

My friend, who was fit and healthy and not an ounce of fat had to have a triple bypass at 49,totally out of the blue...

Like you say,god knows whats around the corner..

No it is not. It is like saying if you burn more calories than you eat you will lose weight.

I agree there is an underlying cause and it is likey genetic and centers around the brain not getting the ' I'm full' signal to stop eating. The types of food you eat can exacerbate this problem. It is no coincidence that the obesity epidemic has happened at the same time as the amount of sugar in the diet has rocketed. Sugar not fat is the enemy and the sooner the government accepts this the better. Reducing fat in the diet has failed to reduce obesity big time since the early 80's.

Whatever...

There are also people that overeat,do little exercise, pile in the sugars and fats but never put an ounce of weight on..... My dad being one,my partner at work being another...

Using your logic this kinda person should be a colossal beast...

I'm fat, don't eat the right foods, drink too much, never excersise and those who don't like it can go F**k themselves. :-)
