Before i buy a new hood pump could i just ask....

HI, well I know the subject has been talked to death, but just though i'd ask before I spend £350 on a new hood pump.

I've taken the roof off and can confirm that the pump has been subject to water ingress, however, the motor still works fine.

I decided to take the roof off as my symptoms were as follows:

on pressing the hood down button, hood latches release and motor buzzes, but no movement. A little help and the hood retracts fine, but doesn't quite lock down.

on pressing the hood up button, no problems, goes up and locks down fine.

Everyone else that has problems usually seems to have a complete motor failure?

So, is it definitely the hood motor that's gone? With the roof off and the motor running, again, with a little initial help the pump then engages the rams and then works.

It feels to me as though it's a problem with the hydraulic parts rather than the motor?

Any thoughts?

That doesnt sound like a motor problem if you can hear the motor running , it sounds more like hydraulic problem , is the fluid level OK ?

Sounds like the hydraulic bypass cable is engaged, on the housing it's not the best fit in the world and could quite easily come loose. Is the roof back on now already?

No, roof's still off, thinking about taking into somewhere before shelling out for a pump.

Bypass valve (attached to red pull cable?) moves in and out and engages/disengages as you'd expect.

Pulled out the motor just spins, back in, roof moves, (once you move the mechanism about an inch to get it started).

So is this not sounding like a straight forward case of duff motor then? :headbang:

Yeah the red handled cable. On the pump side it engages and disengages as it should? Check that the mechanism is working properly because when I was testing mine during returning the motor I had the same issue with motor spinning and nothing happening, could of smashed the lot!! Gave all electrical wires a double and triple check and they all worked so I took apart the release mechanism, made sure the nipple was free and worked, then put it all back together again, tested with battery and hey presto... Back up and running

Perhaps the motor is on its last legs and down on power ? Was it moving the roof but slowly after a helping hand ?

I assume the car battery isnt low on charge ?

Might be worth me having a look at the release mechanism, you can see the lever move as it should.

Not sure if the roof moves particularly slowly, doesn't take that long to go up or down.

One other question... on real oem there are two part no.s, which when getting prices are very different.

Hydro unit - 7193448 (which is on the motor i have removed) is around £350, but Hydraulic unit - 7016893 (which i've seen on write ups) is £750!!!!

Whats the difference between the 'Hydro' unit and 'Hydraulic' unit?

Seems to me the Hydro unit is the 'motor', the hydraulic unit is the whole kit, including the 'motor', housing, bowden cable, hoses etc

I'm attempting to get my roof motor fixed under warranty. The Specialist I took it to has quoted for the whole kit, and fitting £1300+ !!!

Give Jaime in Parts @ Sopers a call 01522 690000 he'll sort you with a good price and let you know what's needed

Hes being a tad greedy......£600 to £650 are the figures being quoted by those who have an Indy ( BMW independent......not a roof specialist)

I'll give them a go, thanks.

With the bypass pulled out, hood moves by hand nice and easy.

So is the 448 hydro unit the correct bit for motor/pump?

The part listed ending 893 points to the same part on the diagram, but that's a bit different in price!

Yes if I have to foot it myself will be between £600 and £700.

The underwriters are trying to call it wear and tear :headbang:

I changed my roof motor myself.

BMW sent me a cq for £320 as goodwill after I wrote to them.
I had to prove the problem was water based but my local main dealer was helpful.
As they should be because they charged me £95 for a written diagnosis.

Right, lets round this off.

Seems as though it was air in the system? After running the pump with the filling screw undone a little and getting some bubbles out it is now working fine (fingers crossed it stays that way).

I thought these self bleed? Had a good look at all the lines and rams, pump etc and can't see any signs of leaks, so not sure how it's managed to get an air lock!

Anyway, all back together, not a bad job to do, though do have a few scraps and cuts on various limbs, and not sure my arms were designed to bend in some of the directions that were needed to get to some of the bits.....

Thanks for your help guys
