BBS 108's best practice

Sounds like the refurbisher has screwed up and put a thick layer of powder coat somewhere. I'd had several sets done several times and never a single rim that didn't slot together.

You need to find the high spots and grind off until it sits perfectly. Anything like bashing the wheel centre in is just not good enough and will certainly damage the finish and likely lead to wheel wobble or even failure if the bolts are badly tensioned to force it to sit.

Maybe the back of the stars has a thick coat of paint on it?

Do you know where the raised area is?

To be Fair To The Refurber Its Not Their Fault As Two Of The Wheels Were Pretty Tight Anyway, So With The Addition Of Paint It Was Only Going To Get Worse. Its Difficult To Know Exactly Where The High Spot Is, My Guess Is That Its Actually On The Outer Rim Which Was Not Powder Coated Originally.

For sure it's their fault. His job is to refurbish wheels. Part of that is ensuring that they fit back together, masking off mating surfaces, cutting back, etc. any lumps of coating.

Just one thought - have you ensured that you are pairing up original inners and outers? They look the same at a quick glance, but aside being matched pairs the fronts and rears are diferent and have the J size stamped on them. Each set I work on has matching punch dots on each rim part.

HI Cj,

Yeah one of the first things they did was put a numbered stamp on corresponding inners and outers as I wanted to ensure no mix ups. I will double check to ensure the 8J are on the fronts and the 8.5J are on the rears.

The small lip on the inner stars were masked off to a degree, they have thin layer of paint but obviously thinner than elswhere as we wanted to minimise any fitment issues.

It's really annoying as I have tapped the other two wheels and assembled them together with no issues, got a trip to Devon in two weeks so really want to get the new wheels and set of Vreds fitted before then.

I can understand the frustration. I'd want to get them sorted and fitted ASAP and use the car.

I'd grind away whatever paint is causing the issue until they sit flush, put some corrosion inhibitor in and Builth team back up. Run a bead of clear silicone on the inner joint to keep water out and you'll be all set.

If you need a tap I think I have one I can lend you.

If its just paint in the way? And excuse my ignorance hear!! Can you not tighten them down opposite bolts a little at a time?? Good luck any how

This is powder coat so it won't give and you're more likely to simply flex the star or it not seat and lead to an unsafe or wobbly wheel.

Ok corrected nice one CJ

Update.

So I Decided Not To Use A Hammer, Or To Grind Away Paint. Instead I Had A Think And Created A Cider Press Using Threaded Bar Attached By Nuts To Three Bolts That I Machined A Taper Onto To Replicate Wheel Studs. These Were placed Into Three Of The Central Stud Holes. The Threaded Bars Passed Through A Peice Of Wood Which Clamped Under The Wheel.

Before Assembling this Pres I Positioned The Inner Star Level Into The Outer Rim,Loosely Fitted Ten Bolts To Keep Everything In Line. I Then Used Some Lubrication From A Well Known Contraceptive Company And Applied Onto The Areas That Were Tight. Using The Press The Inner Piece Sat Down Perfectly!

Have split & painted/powdercoated 2 sets now & not had a problem reseating or needing to mark each star to corresponding rim :?
3 snapped bolts my biggest setback
Think you have been unlucky
