Seems that the proposed action has caused a fair bit of vitriol for some reason. Mine weren't replace under warranty and the stealers tried to deny that they were even aware there was a widespread problem. I think Exactmax has a good idea

2003 with original springs. Perfect, no rust, even have the original parts decals still hanging from them. No complaints here either.

first post, newish member, longtime guest obsever. I've had my '04 3.0 roadster since june 08 (38k miles), and in this time had 2 rear springs fail and I know 1 had been replaced prior to my purchase.
BMW denied completely this was a recognised problem and tried to blame the state of the roads (which are tbf appalling) and speed bumps. I'm the most OCD when it comes to my car and drive so slowly over any speed bump that it is not uncommon for people to beep their horn at me.
I don't think it is a disasterous problem and in general well built cars and good manufacturer, but very frustrated with the blatent false excuses from the dealers. I have reported to watchdog and am surprised so many have had a problem and yet are willing to keep it secret from public. There is a poll thread on the forum from some time back that expresses a lot discontent with the issue.

Personally we have two BMW's, the Z4 and a 5 series. The 5 is due for replacement and we are considering the new 5 series but may choose something else
We have also had a 1 series and I have been very happy with all of them. However if there is a known fault with a vehicle I would expect the manufacturer to accept this and replace the parts, whether the vehicle is still under warranty or not.
If this is not the case, as it appears there are examples of people having to replace the parts themselves, then I would support any campaign to change this, irrespective of which manufacturer it is.

My wife drives our car, often with one of the kids in the car and we are talking about a suspension component.

But it's not just springs, and not just BMW. It's just a common fault. All cars have em.
As said, it's cheap and easy to fix, is picked up at mot, and isn't the worst problem a Z4 owner will come across IMO.

Every car I've owned has had it's common faults....Thankfully in the near 2 years that I've owned it, my 03 Z4 has had nothing more than the auto wipers fail (before I bought it) which I fixed myself 
Our BMW are wonderful.

Sorry ksher,Toyota's are many times more reliable than beemers,and at least that manufacturer is honourable and has the guts to recal cars with minimal faults rather that pretend to ignore known faults unless customers complain under warranty!! Sticky steering anyone,that was a recall if ever I saw one!!!. A friend has an Audi which has had to go back to the dealer for a "software upgrade" to the gearbox, ie a recall in anyone's language..........no big announcements there, no TV headlines. The best car I've ever had was a Celica, 80k miles with NO faults....none.....ever!!.My wife is on her 2nd Yaris (yes it is going in for the accelerator recall), my Dad has an Avensis and it's been great.For your info, the Prius recall is like the Audi, a sotfware upgrade which was going to be offered to customers who wanted it only, as the issue is purely how the brakes feel .There is no issue with the actual operating of the brakes. The press have their facts massively wrong but have enjoyed taking pot shots at a company with a good name for reliability. Toyota could do with taking PR lessons from the germans!!!!
