BBC documentary on roads

I thought the programme was okay - entertaining to an extent, worrying too at times. I have to say though I don't understand what the point was and if they made any valid conclusions.

I have to say I do cycle to work most days so that I can keep the miles of the Zed, the running costs down and the beers off my belly! It also makes the Zed feel that much more special when I do drive it!

I have had only a few experiences of drivers not seeing me or passing way too close. Funnily enough it is never people with nice cars but usually people in tiny cars (Micra's and Swift's) who are the main offenders!!! The guys on the documentary are all too militant. A simple conversation allaying your grievance usually does the trick. Shouting and screaming isn't the solution.

I'd like to be able say it's unbelievable but sadly it seems even the good old beeb can't get it right.
As I said, I've seen all sorts over the years. I did forget to say that most crashes I've been caught in were caused by fellow cyclists esp riding in a bunch. Total wipeout springs to mind on one or two occasions, either coz people forgot the etiquette of group racing/riding ( the calls and hand signals used to help the guys riding blind further back in the bunch) and swerved or simply during an elbows out sprint!
I once took part in London to Brighton for the BHF. That was pretty scary. Thousands of clueless people on bikes.
I still love cycling but you have to ride with preservation in mind and the RADAR on at all times.

The problem nowadays is that many newbie racing cyclists don't go on the traditional Sunday morning club runs where this important etiquette is learnt and apparently lower category road races are littered with crashes caused by inconsiderate riding. Those riders that are schooled on the velodrome also have better bike handling skills and awareness in a bunch racing scenario.

Here is the full video they showed at the end, it's frightening...

All staged managed, the guy paid prize money so he could film it 6 years ago!! Many years ago I watched a similar 'courier race' filmed for YouTube in New York which was equally frightening but not representative of normal riding in a city.

Another video which is not representative of normal riding.

So all the pedestrians and motorists were in on this staged managed event, well that makes it alright then since the winner was getting paid for it

FFS! Who said I approved of it? I'm appalled, like many others, that the producer of the BBC passed this video of as normal city bike riding! The point I'm making is that the video should never have been used by the BBC. See my earlier post today. The police ought to have thrown the book at the lot of them.

Totally agree Lillywhite.
Shall we have a forum bike and tea stop meet one day?
