Battery

Guys,

Hope you can help. I think my battery is on it's way out, sounds tired in the mornings and after work when trying to start it up. 2007 Z4MC.

Has anyone had a failure and what have you done about it dealer or sourced an alternative?

Is it worth using the hidden menu to measure the voltage?

Cheers

Daz

I actually ended up getting a new battery from the dealer. With my BMWCCA discount, the price was about the same as an aftermarket battery, and I didn't have to worry whether it would fit. Make a few phone calls or check online to see if that is the case for you.

I had a problem with mine last Feb, parked the car in my garage as the weather was cold, couldn't start the car the following morning  , called BMW and they sent one their guys around later that day, he found that the car wasn't going fully into sleep mode.

He jump started the car to get some power back in the battery and told me to book the car into my local dealer to run more tests. 2 days later and a software update all was fixed, I was told that some of the car's systems were not going into sleep mode and that the bluetooth system was searching for my paired devices all night. They cycled the battery and no more issues since.

Thanks guys, the problem started after the battery ran flat a couple of weeks ago, hasn't been the same since to be honest. Looks like a trip to the dealer for a quick check up.

buy a trickle charger if not used much with a cut out feature. You can also buy a plug in indicator for the ciggie socket from halfords that shows battery state. Mine suffers in colder weather due to short journeys.

Can any of you tell me if the nav unit in the centre console is meant to flash with the key out of the ignition and door locked. Mine is which is odd.

Do you mean the screen? or an LED on it (that I haven't noticed). One mine neither do it, also the screen should be shut so you shouldn't see it anyway. Does your screen stay up with the ignition off?

No I mean the Nav unit in the centre console behind the seats, where the DVD is situated. I have a flashing red LED and the eject button is lit permanently by the looks of it.

Nav works fine.

stays lit for a while, as soon as you unlock the car and for a while asfter. It assumes you may be out of the car for only a few minutes and doesnt go to sleep straight away - thats my experience anyway

I was told by BMW that the car takes approx 15-25 minutes to go fully into sleep mode, the power draw on the battery from then on is minimal.

Been told my battery and car are in ok shape, it just needs a proper charge. Apparently the alternator can not fully the restore the battery from flat.

So who can recommend me a battery charger. Is this one ok?

Thanks

I've got one you can borrow. Give me a shout, just away to return your PM :)

Mine is from Costco, really good piece of kit.

I am surprised the alternator is not able to fully recharge the battery. You must be driving short distances.

Interestingly enough, normal service resumed this morning. :driving:

Going to charge it overnight and see what happens.

Also, I'm going to have to fully disconnect the battery to charge it. What data will the car lose? I'm hoping the service indicator will remember it's position.

Does anyone know?

You only loose trip mileage, clock and trip computer settings, nothing major.

If you garage your car get a CTEK 3600 or similar and just plug it into the car if your not going to use for a day or two. Will also help keep the battery in tip top condition.
