Battery?

Tayna do good batteries, the OEM AGM is made by Exide 096 AGM 70AH, you'll just about get change out of £100. You'll need to register it if you replace, any local Carly subscriber can do it in about 2 minutes (I have a subscription and adaptor near Cambridge if it helps).

I too got this error message the other day. I’ve not used the car much at all lately due to lockdown etc. I’ve bought a CTEK charger to see if I can recon it (figured it was worth a gamble, as the charger will be handy for trickle charging in future as wfh seems to be in my future).
Assuming the charge works, will the car detect the battery is ok again and clear the error message, or do I need to clear it?
(And can I say thank you to everyone for posting, I’ve only owned this e89 for 4 months, but I’ve already used this forum loads. I’ve done a side indicator swap, cleared the rear lights and gutters of crud to avoid a boot full of water, installed an MMI Prime CarPlay and I’ve got an eye on an exhaust upgrade)

Most errors reset themselves when the fault has gone and the car re-starts.. the fault code probably will be logged but not effect the running.

If the car is not used then you should at least once every 6 weeks do a full re-charge if you cannot keep it on a trickle charge. (BMW guidelines)

The ctek devices do a good job but they can't recover a battery that has been left flat for a while to anywhere near its orginal capacity.

If you do use a charger place it on the charger post in the engine bay not the battery terminal as this will confuse the IBS battery monitor..

Thanks Pbondar,
I’m charging in the engine bay so that I can lock the car fully overnight (got the tip on here from an earlier thread  )
The car still started okay, so I’m hoping the battery wasn’t too flat, but it looks a few years old too, so it might not be long for this world, but worth a try I thought.
I will update once it’s had its full recon.
Thanks

Update: following a charge overnight, the error message was still there.
Following a 10 minute drive, off for an hour, restart, all cleared.
Now to see if it comes back after another couple of weeks of not driving.

Oh it will come back

My ramp light is now daily, waiting to see if Halfords do a Jan sale. Doubt it, bet they are doing a roaring sale on batteries :x

I found Halfords current price for a battery the same price as GSF's "60% off sale" lol...

If you know anyone with a Halfords trade card you can get a good deal on a battery.. still not cheaper than buying from Tayna though

Error returned yesterday. Took the car for a drive again to get fuel and some charge. 🤷‍♂️ At least this confirms (same icon) the two faults were related!

Or anyone with a Blue Light card will get you 10% off

I had similar warnings a while ago and tried to recharge the battery with runs out but it would not hold the charge. Following advice on the forum, and many hours searching the internet for affordable options, I rang Tayna batteries who were exceptionally helpful with no sales pitch. Bought the recommended battery which turned out to be as cheap as any I had found (Especially when used with a discount code) and had it fitted and coded by my local Indy for somewhere around £50

I had various issues and warnings too, plus stop/start issues.
I purchased exact same type Bosch unit online for £125.00.
Don't forget to have battery registered on fitment, my friendly local mechanic had capability on his laptop!

Can someone just explain this coding business for a battery change for me in short. Surely you swap an old battery for a new ans BMW are looking to cash in somewhere.? Whats the score.

Personally I replaced mine a couple of years back and didn't code or registrar it - all good at the moment. Time will tell

The e89 uses ibs (intelligent battery sensor) when you change the battery for a like for like replacement it needs to be registered to the car, the charging algorithm will change after this as a new battery needs to be charged differently to an old one. If you fit a battery with a different capacity it will need coding instead.
If you don’t get registration done the new battery will charge but it probably won’t last for as long.

Rob. Thanks for that. So just for argument sake I take it into bmw to register, not for a new battery, what will they fleece me for this?
Andy

After reading many posts on both sides of the argument I don't want to create another, but....
If this was so important, why is there no mention in the handbook?

All it says is, on replacing the battery (page 123)
'Have the vehicle battery registered in the vehicle by your Service after a replacement to ensure that all convenient access functions are fully available'

Not even a 'you should' let alone 'you must'

Anyway, your money your choice

Doesn't that specifically tell you to register it then? Or am I missing something?

There’s a list on here of forum members with Carly which can register/code batteries, you might find someone local to do it for a drink https://z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=97818
