Battery Time

Ok E89'ers although Ive never had any problems (maybe cause its always tied to a trickle charger) I've decided to change the battery, looks like the original BMW one in it (2009 on the terminal). So shopping around National Tyres are doing Platinum Prestige Plus Sealed Battery (50,000 Engine Starts) 5 year guarantee for £111 including fitting/registering: 12 Volt Battery CCA: 680 AH: 75. So not being an expert on batteries does that sound ok?

No...cause..

Its not AGM
Its not approved by them for start-stop operations..the 50,000 starts is normal start of the day..not stop start
Its not suitable for re-gegenerative braking systems like the E89

Apart from that its fine..

This is the one I purchased for my 2009 30i https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Varta-E39-UK-Ref-096-100-Start-Stop-Plus-AGM-Car-Battery-570-901-076-/360559159342

:D

That's a rave from the grave..only eclipsed (pun) by Miller dynamos if you remember them?

Maybe a daft question, but are all E89's stop/start? My 2013 20i hasn't shown any signs of it being so equipped - my 2012 Yeti diesel has a battery on the way out and the stop/start doesn't work, even after a 100 mile drive, but there's an icon on the dash that displays at a standstill that shows it's not working. I get no such icon in the Zed. I'd prefer not to have it, so if it was an option on one of the many Packs BMW are so good at selling I hope the original owner gave it a miss.

To the best of my knowledge the E89 never came with stop start engine, a salesman at Sytner once tried to tell me a Zed I was buying did have this facility but after talking to him for 5 minutes it became obvious he didn’t have the first clue about BMWs

Stop start was avaiable on E89s from 2011 onwards..the option varied by engine type and gearbox type as well as territory..

If you had stop start fitted you would have a defeat button in the switch group by the gear lever as part of the PDC/heated seats group/roof group..

Seperately stop start if fiited, to be enabled needs the battery to be in good health and with a good charge..my Volvo XC70 stop /start has not worked since the lockdown, in part by lack of use and battery drain and at 5 years old looks like its now on its way out..

Well mine's a 2litre auto and doesn't have the switch on the dash

My Renault Trafic has the switch and the original battery lasted 2 years and the stop start was only working after a long run, which is how I realised it was on the way out. The replacement was 50% more expensive than one for a non stop/start model which is probably more money than you'd save by having the auto function active!

I stand corrected
