Well the battery finally gave up after 8-1/2 years. So my question is...
Can a battery charger or a trickle charger be connected to the terminals in the engine compartment while changing the battery out? Don't want to lose any settings if I can help it.
If this was discussed before, Sorry I could not find it.

Yes, you can do that. I am not sure that's it's necessary but I did that when I changed my battery out and I had no issue at all.
 
Also, if you don't want to spend the money for a BMW battery an excellent replacement is the Interstate Battery model MTP-48/H6A which exceed the OEM battery specifications.
 
Thanks for the info WLH. Interstate battery you suggested is the one I was thinking to buy. Just for the heck of it, I checked with the local BMW dealer and was shocked at what they wanted (over $300).
 
BSVA, be sure to shop around for the Interstate battery as the list price as I recall is around $200 but I paid around $130 for mine after checking with a number of Interstate dealer. Also, the Interstate battery has 2 vent holes. Make sure you get a plug for the unused vent hole. Should be supplied with the battery but not always.
 
Thanks for your input, will be checking around for a good deal. So far I came up with $160, but will continue the search.
 
WLH, just bought and fitted the new battery you had suggested this morning. Had to pay $160, but no complaints here. Battery was a perfect fit and no problems. Had the charger going while doing the work and lost nothing. Thanks again for the info. :thumbsup:
 
BSVA, excellent as I don't think you can go wrong with the Interstate battery. 84 month warranty as I recall, more starting amps and if you do have a problem almost every gas station, independent repair shop and auto part store sells Interstate batteries.
