Battery Replacement

I've been reading horror stories about battery replacements and BMW's not starting after a battery has been replaced and all kinds of other problems. I've also been reading debates about "Battery registration" and whether or not it is necessary for a 2006 Z4.

Can anyone confirm if "Battery Registration" is nonsense for a 2006 Z4?

Should I be concerned about going to the local auto parts store and installing a new battery (my choice would be an interstate battery)?

All of these debates in various BMW forums are a bit of sensory overload so I'm just looking for the straight answers.

I ask because I've gotten my first indication the battery may be weak and on its way out (zero'd out clock, trip, mpg and mph) after a very cold night in NC.

Mine pretty much died right afterI got the car, a 2007 Z4 and I was worried about all the debates as well. I had a code reader ordered and on the way so I took the chance and replaced the battery. I didn't have any problems, but I did register the new battery about a week later when my code reader arrived.

The May of 2011 issue of Roundel (page 114) had an article in the Tech Talk section by Mike Miller who stated that our E85/86 cars did not require battery registration. Later BMW models do, but not ours.

ghook1967, the perfect battery replacement for your Z4 is the Interstate MTP-48/H6. Replaced mine over a year ago. Hooked up a trickle/battery charger to the terminals in the engine bay while replacing the battery, that way didn't lose any settings.Be sure the vent tube is hooked up to the new battery. This battery is identical to the original battery. No battery registration required.

Less than a week into ownership I've replaced my battery with a Bosch s4 as I had no confidence in the original bmw one, it was definitely slow to spin over first start of the day & I'd rather replace slightly early than get caught out and stranded somewhere.
Had to retune my radio & I'm sure I had one touch window closing before which I now seem to have lost?

I had my battery off recently to clean inside the battery box and to enable a steering wheel replacement.

I had to reset the clock, radio and have done all the searches on here regarding window reset.

All is now fine except I too no longer have one touch close on both windows (I'm sure I had it before )
I do have one touch opening.

Any ideas ?

Grumpyowl- my car only has touch close / open on the drivers side. However when closing / opening the roof both windows will fully wind up or down if you leave your finger on the roof operating switch long enough! Makes you think "why didn't BMW just make both touch switches!!"

I replaced my battery this weekend (after finding out it was flat the evening before my MOT). Luckily there is a Eurocar parts centre 2 mins away.

The battery swap took 30 mins and all I needed to do was reset the clock and windows. Replaced the battery with a Bosch S5 with a 5 year guarantee.

The car passed it's MOT with no issues!
