Battery low/ overheating

Hi

Can anyone give me any pointers. I have a 2006 E85 3.0si auto and drives like a dream despite mileage (122k)

Today my wife drove the car and when she went to restart it, it wouldn't start. She managed to jump it but 10 mins into drive the car started overheating so she pulled over and stopped. She went to lock the car and the key had stopped working

I went out and (eventually) managed to jump it but after 5 mins of driving it flagged as overheating again (again no other symptoms). I pulled over and stopped & then had to jump it & managed to drive it 5 mins home with no further issues. A similar thing happened a few months ago but without the key issue / struggling to jump

I am assuming it is battery related so am currently charging it up (with key in ignition to try to charge too) but is it possible to overheat as battery is low?

I think you may be having two different problems at the same time but you really need to get the fault codes read to be sure.

Facelift cars like yours have an electric water pump which at some point will just die. The overheating you describe seems to suggest the pump may only be working intermittently, but the non-starting definitely sounds like a battery/charging circuit issue.

As for the key they charge inductively while in use, so you might get it charged by a wireless charger. Some owners have had some success putting them next to a Braun toothbrush charger, but other brands are available!

Hi Mr Tidy

Thanks for the response - it probably is two issues and just a coincidence, but I'm hoping it's just battery related! I have been charging tonight and will do again in the morning; the good news is the key is working again 😀

I think I have a code reader somewhere (which I'd forgotten about until you mentioned!) so will try that in the morning too 👍

Cheers

If the battery is old change it, low voltage causes havoc with a cars electronics including the water pump control on your car, also make sure the alternator is charging properly. It may well be that there is another system draining the battery but make sure battery and alternator are good first, in my experience modern batteries often fail suddenly, usually one cell fails.

Battery was replaced earlier this year (I do very little mileage anyway, but not existent over winter as car is only used for golf 🏌️‍♂️but forgot to disconnect)

Drove today for 2* 20 min journeys and no issues at all. Is due MOT soon so will probably bring forward to get it looked at
