Battery disconnect

I realise this may sound like a stupid question but, are there any issues with disconnecting the battery on a pre-facelift Z4?

The reason I ask is that E60's need a backup power supply when swapping the battery & I wondered if the Z4 was the same.
 
depends how long you plan on disconnecting the battery for.

I swapped mine out with no issues.
 
I've got two jobs to do; fit a cruise control stalk & fit a new tilt sensor.

Getting to the tilt sensor involves pulling out the sat nav & cd changer so that may take a while.
 
Will not be a problem. People do this all the time to work around seats and other airbag related components. You'll have to reset the radio presets and time, as well as reset the auto window function. Several systems will go through a re-learn process, but will do so on their own with no intervention.
 
I researched this recently as mine is on the blink from all the threads on the subject on Google.

Concensus was on the net the Z4 E85/86 are some of the last BMW's that don't need to be Stealer visited for changing the battery if you do it as a straight swap - you might have to reset windows / clock / radio but that is about it.

Later cars have to be sync'd with the cars brain but will tell u for sure when I change mine later this week
 
Fitted the cruise stalk today. Had to reset clock of course & reinitialise windows. Never had to do that on my E36 cab.

The cars are getting more complex. My brothers E89 needs new rear pads but it's a dealer (or specialist) visit to wind the caliper pistons back. The days of diy are almost over :x

As soon as it becomes the norm, the 'tool' will become as cheap as chips on EBay

Correct and correct. We're the last of the breed (BMW). Change your battery and don't worry! As mentioned above you might have to reset the windows/clock/radio which is quick and easy.

I know this is an old thread but hoping someone can asnwer this in the reinitialisation instructions it says
Avoid a break between the two steps!
• Open door window glass fully
• Operate and hold power window switch in "Close" position (second switch stage)
• Once the upper end position has been reached, hold power window switch in "Close" position for approx. 2 seconds longer

Is this done with both windows at the same time or one at a time ?

You can do both windows at the same time or one at a time (I find the latter somewhat easier).

If you don’t do it the one touch window operation doesn’t work or the auto closure.
