battery dead

I posted on here not too long ago about having some battery troubles - looks like its finally given up the ghost, so i'll be looking to replace it.

What i was wondering is if there was any specific reason we go to BMW to get the replacement battery? In Aus the battery is $555 from a dealer, but a similar speced battery from a reputable supplier is about $300?

This thread has some info on what to look out for when replacing the battery, especially when replacing it with one that has different spec (e.g. a lightweight racing battery).

And if your not using the car daily get a batter maintainer such as a CTEK unit to keep the new one in tip top condition.
