Battery Charging ?

Have done a search but can`t find a definitive answer, can the battery be maintained through the cigarette lighter ? It`s a UK `06 Z4M.

My cheapo £10 Clarke charger has died (2nd one in 6yrs) so looking for a Ctek on Ebay, the XS800 is able to maintain a battery upto 100Ah, so more than enough but not sure wether to get the comfort leads for boot fitting direct to the battery or the easier fag lighter.

Charge it by connecting to the dedicated posts under the bonnet. One on the bulkhead the earth on the passenger inner wing

As far as I'm aware the lighter socket completly shuts down after 15 minutes when the car goes into sleep.

I thought you were supposed to use the terminal in the engine bay for jump starting & battery charging? Never had to do it on the Z4M, but it was a regular activity on the M5 for a while (battery under rear seat).

I've been connecting my XS800 to the battery terminals for the last year, can't get to the bonnet when the car's in the garage

I`ve been using the terminals under the bonnet but it`s a hassle to get to in the garage, anyone know for definite if the cigarette socket is a no go ?

mikem7709, my understanding on US models from 2006 on must be connected via the battery terminals. Z3 and preface lift Z4's can be connected via the cigarette lighter.

I was wondering about this recently. On the E89, the boot opening operation is electric (not mechanical), so if the battery goes flat there's no access to the boot. :?

Actually on the 2003 to 2008 Z4's there is a connection in the engine compartment for jump starting and/or battery charger. Is there not such a connection in the E89?

Indeed there is. I guess as mmm-five says above, this is how it should be done.
