Battery charging

Not had any real problems regards the battery, couple of years old now.
I tried to register it at the time. The Foxwell obd reader method seemed not very positive if it had taken, like no feed back from screen.

Few weeks ago battery low came on, i had the boot open a lot getting tools to work on bike. Got extra boot lights don't help.
Plus sat a week using another vehicle.
So whilst tatting i connected my Halfords intelligent charger to the under bonnet points.
11.7 volts (low?) from memory, so it started charging at 12.3 volts. I wait for it to rise to 14+ volts.
All good.
Hour later charging had stopped just showing volts at 12.1.
Can't be right, was the car electrics stopping the charge or had the charger paused to check the state of charge.
But didn't restart charging.
So i check battery volts direct...11.7 volts at the terminals.
So have now connected charger to battery posts.
4 hours later still charging.
Check volts 12.1........now charging at 14 volts.
Have been driving car last few days, thought it might have kept fully charged.
Everything works ok.
Sometimes wonder if re registering battery might make a difference. Need to check the historical capacity next from obd.

What current does your Halfords device charge at? It should be written on it or on instructions. Is it an AGM charger?, presuming you have an AGM battery?
11.7 volts is very flat battery and could take many hours to charge depending on charging current. Modern cars take so much out of batteries that alternators rarely fully charge whilst driving. Using a quality charger overnight for a day every month (especially in winter) is a good habit to get into.

Not all chargers are equal..I have 4 and they all behave differently..even the two Lidl ones behave differently...DME only influences charging when the engines running..

Incorrect registration can result in incorrect/inadequate charging

Just had a thought regards the alternator.
When the oil filter heat exchanger seal blew, twice! it soaked the alternator.
Did try to clean as best i could on the car, wonder if still contaminated?
I'm seeing the correct volts when running, wonder if amps are down..

Seems implausible to me

So fully charged battery overnight. Checked the battery history,
Down to 35% never been above 41% last 5 days.
So clue was it said last battery replacement was 157k kms. (85k miles)
Now 174k. (93k miles)
Car has done 108k miles?
I don't think my last attempt to register battery worked.
So fully charged i've pulled the -ve for 5mins then reconnect..
Then re-registered battery.
This time i certainly needed to do more than before, asking for a 6 digit code off battery -ve terminal.
I just put in any old 6 numbers and it came back registered. ( i think just keep track of fleet batteries).
Also asked for another code, gave example, so just copied it.
Mileage count has gone to zero.
So i'll check history in a few weeks.
