Battery charger

Can anyone tell me if the Z4 - E85 2006 is CANBUS wired? I need a new battery charger and just want to make sure I get the right one. The bike which is a 2009 BMW is CANBUS and I have a switchable charger for that. Any recommendations would be welcome

Hi

I use a 10amp CTEK charger without any issues ,,,

I have it permanently installed on the wall in the Garage .... M installed it for me :D

Jaq - don't!! :D

Has your fuel gauge gone kaput yet? Mine went last spring and I've still not fixed it, I never used the thing anyway - trip to zero on tank up and re-fill between 180 and 200 miles. If I ever sell the bike - which isn't likely anytime soon - I'll put a new sender unit in but it has to be actuated by BMW - or someone with the tool to do it. It's a stupid idea anyway, why not just use a float and variable resistor like it's always been done? BMW try to be too clever sometimes I think.

There was a fix posted on the BMW bike forum to turn out the low fuel light using resistors, but I've just stuck a bit of black tape over it - works for me.

Not yet :)

I read somewhere that gauge could be fixed with cigarrette lighter. Quite few people have changed sender unit without calibrating it.

Only problem I've got with this bike was in Denmark in heavy rain. We were coming back from Germany and left turn signal started to live it's own life. I had constantly press cancel button to stop blinking. :D

:D :D :D Don't you just love Bimmers? My old R1100S went up in a cloud of smoke at a Sunday biker meet about 10 years ago. The wiring loom was stretched like a banjo string across the screen frame, so it eventually cut right through shorting out loads of stuff in the process. Lovely bike but big trouble, I got shot of it at 17k miles and bought a Honda. I always said, it's a good thing BMWs are nice to ride because if they weren't no bugger would ever buy one.

Interesting you say the new fuel sender doesn't need calibrating, a few people have said that to me, yet I read an official service bulletin a while back saying it does. Also, I took mine in for the fuel pump recall in November (which was another story) and the service guy mentioned the fuel gauge wasn't working - like I didn't know, duh! :) I said I'd buy one and fit it myself if I ever felt the need for a working gauge, and he said I'd have to take it in to have it "set-up". I suppose it'll be suck it, and see what happens.

Yes, i heard about the zapping it with one of those electric lighters. May read up on it and give it a go. You're lucky yours is still working, what mileage has your bike done? Mine went off at about 7.5k miles - it's a very low miler because it wasn't used for ages following a hefty heart attack in 2012, it's only got about 9k miles on it at present. I only use for day rides now, the long bike tours are a thing of the past, sadly. I used to love the long trips, we did a few including one in Cananda in 2010 with my son, we hired two bikes out of Vancouver and rode out to Alberta to the icefileds and back. Done a few Europe tours as well.

Hi, I don't know if this will help you, but there was a recent post about CTEKs' . Heres the link:

Thanks - missed that one somehow! I used to pop my late model MX5 on charge with the bike charger to keep it trickling when not in use for a while - usually only during the depths of winter when the roads are filthy. But, that was 100% canbus wired, as is the bike, and the charger I already have is switchable from Canbus to normal. The Zed though. from what I can make out isn't 100% canbus, it's bit of a hybrid as I understand it - maybe someone can clarify? I know that using a normal charger on canbus wired vehicles can potentially affect a few things like sensors etc.

I need another charger anyway because the bike and car live on opposite sides of the garage and it's a pain moving the charger over, plus of course when it's on the car it can't be used on the bike and vice versa.

It's my third bimmer, first I had an R12C for few years, I swapped it to an 1150R and then to this one. RT has now about 83k km (52k mls) on clock.
It should be working without calibration, but it might not be accurate.
It could also calibrated with GS-911 tool. Maybe somebody near you has one? http://www.hexcode.co.za/products/gs-911

Most advanced special tool I have is this; http://www.beemerboneyard.com/abs3funnel.html

Nice pictures you got there

We have a BMW bike indy not far from here, Jaq so if i ever get around to doing the sender I'll pay him a visit to get it checked over. You got some miles on yours then? :)

I don't think I'll be needing that tool for mine - it's a rare non-ABS model. It's also a rare factory lowered one as well so I was lucky finding it as I'm only a little fella with short fat hairy legs. As I got older taller bikes were becoming a bit of a handful. it came from Rainbow BMW in Rotherham, great people to deal with - couldn't fault them.

I've never reallly liked ABS on bikes, for no other reason than they can be a tad expensive when the ABS module fails - as has happened to some Bimmer bikes out of warranty, but if needs be I'd have had one. It was just another buying point for me that was ticked off when I got it. I started riding bikes in 1967 so lack of abs doesn't bother me in the slightest. I love the boxer engine though, in fact I just love big twins - or Vee 4s.

Is that much?? :P

I'm quite short myself and had to lower seat. Equipped it with heating too.
Mine has servo abs, which is the most hated :) But I change brakefluids annually to avoid any problems. And abs units can be repaired, there is atleast one company in Germany who fixes those.

I've changed also those lifetime final drive oils, there is not even drain plug to get old oil out.

I at least have the drain plug in mine which saves having to mess about dropping the drive unit downwards to change the oil. My biggest concern with the newer final drive is there's no breather - all diffs and bevel boxes need a breather to vent the expanded air, I can't understand why some idiot at BMW decided it would be a good idea to do away with it. If you have moisture anywhere near the oilseals it can be sucked into the unit as it cools and couldl possibly contaminate the oil.

I was in the process of making a breather for mine when I got ill and it never got finished, I may get back on with it soon. I change my bevel box oil every 1000 miles - overkill for sure but there's such a small amount (180ml after they reduced the amount follwing loads of warranty claims) in there it's best to overdo the oil changes rather than leave it for too long. "Filled for life" my arse - they have some real jokers working at BMW these days.
