Battery Cable Recall & then EML on !

Hi,

Decided to take the Z4 to a certain main dealership in Oxford for its Battery Cable recall as I keep getting letters. Amazing how quick they are when they cannot charge you. Anyway, got 8 miles from the dealership and the engine management light comes on but car fine. Got home, used Carista to read the codes and it is P0420 and P0430 'under Cat threshold' messages which points towards the Cat and/or O2 sensors as had it previously earlier in the year.

Can't be bothered to go back to dealership as they will claim it is nothing to do with them, coincidence and try and charge me £60 to read faults. Spoke to my local indie who I trust completely said reset them and see if they reappear. They already changed one O2 sensor earlier this year, it has done 98k so about right......It is just such a coincidence.

All the distances/mpg/mph have been reset as the battery has been out (Garage couldn't even be bothered to set the time correctly afterwards they were so keen to get me out the door) so just crossing my fingers it is just a blip. I did pull up half way, check in the boot & bonnet and then pull away rapidly which I don't often do but can't believe that would upset sensors.

Reason why i am very reluctant to take my car in. 10 years it's been fine.
Just don't want it coming back with more faults.
But i think there is afoot to fail mot if all callbacks not complied with.
I wonder if insurers would have a say if a car was written off and a call back not done item was the cause.

A few months after I got my current E86 (so same N52 engine as yours) I got an Amber EML that turned out to be the same 2 codes you've got.

I had them reset and my BMW Indy dosed it with Cat A Clean and suggested using only premium fuel.

That worked for a couple of months, but the Amber EML came on again, so I booked it in for another diagnosis.

While they were trying to read the codes the battery died (it was the 10 year old OE one) so a new battery, those same codes cleared and another dose of Cat A Clean I picked it up and stuck to premium fuel.

That was nearly 3 years ago and the codes haven't come back thankfully!

It might be worth checking your battery condition, or maybe because they would have had it disconnected for the recall.

Z4s do seem prone to throwing up random faults when there are electrical issues - but I hope you can get it sorted painlessly.

If the car burst into flames due to a faulty battery lead & they found out recalls had been ignored for the same issue....

I wouldn't want to risk that scenario!

But I've had a few recalls with BMWs, and half the time they issue the recall before they have the parts to fix it.
