So I was off to the dealers for an oil change and dash light scan.
Some might recall when I replaced my rear brakes and got the Triple Threat Light Show ,
I replaced the rear brake sensor to no avail, so I hoped the BMW Super Computer could tell me WTF was going on.
So after a time in the BMW Spa - quaffing down free Peek Freans and Espresso..
The SA retrieved me and I got to sit in his hot seat.
I was expecting some sort of shade for using reasonably priced after market brake pads which can't communicate with rest of the car but...
Wrist slap time was totally focused on Battery Choice ????
I replaced the original battery about 3 years ago with a reasonably priced Walmart version H6 as per the Walmart Super Computer.
And the H6 took a fit this Spring. The computerized trickle charger posted a WTF diagnosis which I interpreted to mean I should pick up another H6 which was now a little more expensive due to the crap Canadian dollar.
So the BMW SA - He tells me that my dashboard light show which coincidentally happened at the exact same time that I replaced the brake pads, is related to my use of a non BMW Battery ! ???
I'm thinking - Do batteries still used volts and amp / hours ? What is this curious BMW Battery ?
Now correct me if I'm wrong:
My understanding is that the stock BMW is an AGM battery, which means 'glass mat'. That means the lead plates in the battery are supported by a layer of matting.
These mats help the lead plates from destructing over time. (Probably caused by a sport suspension with RFT Tyres beating the crap out of the battery .)
I also think that as an added bonus, a glass mat battery can be installed at any angle as leakage of electrolyte is no longer an issue.
Now for the hook !
I can fix my problem by buying an Official Battery from the parts counter guy for a measly $448.00 plus 13% tax and installation.
I chuckle to myself - I could replace the H6 battery 4 times for that price.
Although I was also warned that by using my battery I risk the return of my tri-light dash show.
The cost of this lesson via my dash light scan and re-set About $200.
Plus ..On the receipt / invoice there is a prominent reminder "Customer Refused Battery"
I paid the price and exited the dealership with as many cookies and treats that I could discretely stuff in my pockets.
So what do you think.
A battery shocked the brake, tyre pressure and traction control lights?
Cheers
