Bargain New E85/86 Cup Holders!

Having bought a driver's side cup holder and face plate a few months ago for £57.84, I decided at that price not to bother with the passenger side. However, I recently came across the following on Amazon:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B08N42LNTS/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

At £34.49 including the face plate and postage I thought I'd take a chance. It had an estimated delivery date of January, so was obviously due to ship from China. However, it's just arrived - just 12 days after I ordered it! The package had a return address of Reading, so it must have actually shipped from within the UK, and had no customs declarations.

I haven't fitted it to the car yet, as it's tucked away for the winter, but the mechanism works fine, and it looks pretty sturdy (well, as sturdy as the poor original design permits anyway!).

They also list the right/left pair (again including face plates) for £66.43 here:

That has to be a bargain! :)

Indeed it looks a good deal.
Wifey was asking about some for hers but decided the money was better spent on petrol :D
However, at that price.................

A bit of a numpty question, but how easy is it to remove the blanking plate and fit cup holders?

Easy peasy, just don't use anything sharp or metal to unclip things. The cheap plastic dash tools are good.

OK, better expand on the numpty bit.......
Do the blanks just prise off?
How is the cup holder fitted?
Does the dash need to be dismantled or does it 'push fit'?
I'm just trying to get an idea of the time, tools and patience I will need.

Don't worry, found it.

Great find! I feel like it may be worth stocking up given how close I have come to snapping off the driver one getting in and out with it open.

This jogged my memory that my driver side cup holder was broken so I have just been outside and taken the vent/cup holder assembly out of the car. I can see the arm is broken. I decided at this price I would just buy the complete unit and reassemble.

I had a bit of difficulty finding the right hand side version but found it after a bit of searching. It can be found here.

Looks as though they are about to experience a Christmas rush on these!

A similar thing happened a few years ago. Several of the Cobra replica kits have the handbrake lever mounted between the driver's seat and the door, so to stop the lever getting in the way when getting in and out, they use the drop-down lever from a Jaguar XJS convertible models (remember those?). The problem is that the breakers all soon learned (just as they did with Corsa B EPAS steering columns) that there was now a demand for these secondhand items, and the prices rocketed - £100 to £150 for rusty levers that in the main had knackered ratchets anyway.

Again, quite by chance I noticed on eBay a company selling new drop-down handbrake levers for the Aston Martin DB7 which, further research into the part numbers revealed, were identical to the XJS ones. They obviously had a batch of New Old Stock items, and were selling them for £64. I quickly reported this on the UK Cobra Club forum, and it was amazing to see the stock levels plummet to zero on eBay over the next few days. I still wonder now whether the guys ever figured out why, all of a sudden, the world and his wife wanted a handbrake lever for a car that went out of production 13 years previously! :D

Anyway, I'm glad this his helped you guys - it's what this forum is all about.

It is an easy job, just be careful not to mash/mark the plastic fascia when prizing off the blanking plate and removing the top cap from the screw at the top of the vent. Also, the screw with the top cap and the other screw you have to remove look similar but the top cap only fits on one of them, so don’t get them mixed up.

Thanks, I'll take care to keep the screws separate then.

Totally agree, I've lost count of the number of times I have clattered it with my knee getting out the car. Funny thing is I fitted them but hardly use them as they don't really hold a tall travel cup very well at all.

I have not tried to fit it yet, but I got this one for £26 delivered. Looks the same as my original drivers side from a quick look, will fit it in a few days but happy so far.

Side note but AliExpress now charge tax so the cost will be a bit more :(
