Bad sound when engine starts [SOLVED]

This only happens when the engine is cold and not driven for at least a day.
I'm charging the battery to see if it is the reason why this is happening.
Will check tomorrow.

Any other suggestions?

PS if you can't hear it well, put your headphones on.

There will be far more technical people than me on here but sounds like a starter motor to me...

Wait for proper advice from someone else tho

If that’s the consensus I’m changing mine today

I’ll do a write up how it goes

Very difficult to make the sound out even with headphones but may detect the bendix being slow to retract once the car starts and it spins the starter motor a bit before retracting like it should. Pull it out and give it a clean and light lube so it slides freely and then give it a try, you can bench thest it with 12v put to it. These starters give no warning of failing had to change mine recently.

Thank you for answers gentlemen!
Battery was fully charged this morning and it happened anyway so it's probably the starter.
Will do what @colb suggested.

starter changed bud- will do a write up in a few mins for you in the 'how to' section

It’s not a bendix style starter on the Z4, it’s a pre engaged one where the solenoid moved the starter gear into mesh with the ring gear before then turning the engine over. Might be worth knowing if you are looking for a replacement.

Thanks! Everything will be checked when the spring arrives. Until then it will be in a garage because the weather is and will be s**t.
