Bad luck or what (Springs)

Had my car booked in at a BMW Indy to have the NSR spring and front brake pads changed.

On my way to the garage the bloody other rear spring broke. :headbang:

I've got to go back to the garage to get the OSR spring fitted on Tuesday.

If it would have broke earlier i'd have got aftermarket springs fitted.

Surely BMW are aware of these breakages??

oh that sucks :o what are the chances :idunno:
There has been a number of posts on this and other forums concerning spring breakages. However, only limited information is posted on the year model of the car and number of miles. Are springs breaking only on cars manufactured during a specific time period and/or mileage?

How about starting a thread with input giving type (roadster/coupe) date of manufacture (month/year) mileage when break discovered, and which spring/springs broke?

All this spring breaking (cue American holiday joke!) is worrying to a new owner, I suspect I wouldn't vbe able to tell if mine had gone or not!

How do the costs compare between going from OEM springs to Third Party? Presumably it is something you'd also need to declare to the insurance companies...

I meant what are the chances of the one spring breaking on the way for the other to be fixed....

I've suffered a spring break on mine at about 30k miles - offside rear. no idea about the previous owners. mines a March 04 build

If I'm 'pushing on' and a spring breaks, what is the likely effect on the handling/roadholding?

Is it something that is likely to spear me off the road, or is it just something that will make a clonking noise over bumps.

Surely if it was the former, then BMW would have to do something about it in order to stop major compensation claims.

I noticed no difference to handling when mine went, if it wasn't for the clonking of the loose part of the spring I would have been none the wiser 'til MOT time :o

Same with me, i didnt notice any handling difference with my rear springs broken.

The cost to replace was £72.18 for the spring and £48 for fitting.

The receptionist said that both her rear springs went during the two years she owned a 2003 3 series.

Mine's an '05 build 2.5 SE not sure when the spring went but I dead hear a noise from the back about 3 weeks ago when we had all the snow, since then I haven't heard any more noises. Mine should be replaced next Tuesday when the dealer does the MOT as it's under warante.

Wouldnt it be a good idea to replace both at the same time anyway? I though it was good practice to do this where brakes/suspension was concerned.

Please don't start that! :pinch:

I have decided, if any of my springs go I am replacing the whole lot with NON-oem springs. It's f**king ridiculous the quality of the BMW springs, along with the window regulators, steering shaft etc..etc.. all this crap should be recalls! Anyone who argues about German engineering being great (nowadays) needs their head read!

+1

Although that's what I've done. I knew my 2004/54-plate had 2 broken rear springs when I bought it 2nd hand in December (on 18,00 miles...) but the previous owner couldn't believe it when the inspection picked it up - the car felt no different. I continued driving on the broken springs but immediately ordered Eibachs, but before I could fit them the driver's side suffered another breakage. Again, didn't affect the driveability but I was seriously worried on that drive home about the whole thing falling out :o

Eibachs were £152 for the springs plus whatever your fitting is (I did mine mostly myself). Plus aye, tell the insurers!

So, that's:
2004/54-plate 3.0i SE
1st registered Oct 2004
18,500miles
2 snapped rear springs

Ah, just seem the list thread started so will post my details there: http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=9219

First spring went on mine just before its service last year. Other one I suspected to be on its way and was confirmed yesterday when it broke free treating me with a very loud clonking noise over any slightly uneven surface. Ironically today was like the first day of spring in the UK but I was unable to enjoy it out in the car. :x
