Back2you vehicle tracker

With the impending delivery not far away been thinking of one of these vehicle trackers. Looking at the demo video seems a cheapish way keeping tabs on your Zed should the worst happen.

What do peeps think? Part of me says if the Zed was nicked I wouldn't want it back however if it was stolen with the aim of selling and is not damaged then this unit could be boon.

I don't think it is thatcham approved, and it looks rubbish.

You better spend the money on shortfall insurance (invoice value)instead.

BMW Trackstar lists for £219 and it is Thatcham 5 or 6. Dunno how much they charge for the service though. -- Edit looks like service is £132/year. . . or 3 years for £399 http://www.trafficmaster.co.uk/content/1/93/bmw-renewals.html

It is this system:

Thanks for that, I would just like too know what the difference if between paying hundreds with subscriptions against paying half the price without a subscription as basically its just a GPS with a phone sim card so it tells you where the GPS is :?

I think the police will make no effort to find your car with Back2you. Trackstar is approved the insurance, and premium is lower. Police vehicles have tracking device and can track the car directly.

And it is not worth to fit Trackstar on non-M cars or anything under £40k. I know someone who had M3 (E92) with BMW Trackstar. The car was stolen by professional and was never recovered. All you really need is shortfall insurance that pays you the difference between invoice value and insurance pay out if the car is fully written off/stolen.

But surely if my car was stolen and I knew exactly where it was then are you saying the Police would do naff all if I told them its location and that its been stolen? :|

The chances are you wouldn't know where it is. As soon as its undercover or in a container the gps will be useless. The basic tracker monitor starts broadcasting a radio signal that the police can lock onto.

It says it will work in cargo containers. Plus point is it can be moved between vehicles and can be set up so it messages your phone when the car is moved. Quite like the idea of knowing where the car is when it goes into the dealer :) You can't do that with the TRACKER.

Tim.

That's easily tested. Go stand in one and see if you get a cellphone signal (you won't)

Any metal container is a faraday cage and will insulate your car from the outside and vice versa. If any signal escapes it will be weak and the gps will be essentially disabled so it won't be able to tell you where it is even if it could get a signal.

BTW I'm a radio and radar engineer by training. I wouldn't buy a system relying on gps and cellular technologies...

But, your choice sir, your choice. :)

Hmmmm OK Mr Faraday :) maybe I would be unlucky and my motor would be driven straight into a container on Sainsbury's carpark :) .....unlikely. But for 99.9% of the time if my motor was taken then it would tell me and I would at least know something was amiss which has to better than discovering that was the case hours later after being non the wiser?

To be fair, if someone wants your car you're not going to stop them. I have a tracker, but only because it was dealer fitted from new.

Look for beedubs post on his experience though. The thieves have worked out how to disable them it appears :(

If you're insured properly then why worry, you'll stress yourself into an early grave!

Now to fit a remote controlled explosive device under the drivers seat. I may not get the car back but my personal revenge will be satisfied :)

I think it can be used for other purpose, e.g. tracking the location of your partner/children  . But you have to make sure that they don't know their cars are fitted with Back2you  .

Not worried or stressed just the smug feeling that I can track the car and the scrotes that took it :)

I rather like this device. I can see where my car has gone if valet parked. Move it between cars, find my parked car, see where Mrs CJ is spending money, etc.

The idea of insurance simply doesn't work where the car is worth more to me than its insurance book value, although I could look into fixed value policy.

The need to charge it would annoy me, but that's the trade off with portability.

This kind of device seems a good thing to fit to your offsprings motor, so you are able to check to see where they maybe getting up to any unruly, or lewd behaviour :D

This is what I'm thinking, OK its not a TRACKER whereby the Police can actually track it but the fun is knowing where my car should be and is a kind of reasurance. Also if you don't trust your stealer you can keep tabs on your pride and joy :D Also like you say you can swap it between cars which you can't do with TRACKER. I think the units charge lasts for 60 days and will text your mobile when it requires one.

Worth a read--

As others have already said, GPS doesn't work inside a sea container. While the LA Times article says "gps device", the car must have a LoJack or similar transponder.

But if the tracker is set up like the Back2you can be to text you as soon as your car is moved or driven away then hopefully a call to the police would see it being tracked down sooner rather than later before it ever reached a container :| Perhaps I need to park next too a Ferrari :)

Anyways I've ordered a Back2you unit will let you know how it fares.

I hope they use ParcelForce, cos if it goes missing, at least it can be tracked.

And you're going to have to check your phone every time you drive off...... :headbang:
