Back box refurbishment

Hi All,

I am just looking for advice really, if i was to buy second hand back boxes, with surface corrosion and would like to put these back to being 'new', are the exhaust boxes coated/Chromed, or just polished? I am not talking about the tail pipes, the actual boxes themselves.

Thanks in advance,

Phil

They are not plated just a fairly low grade stainless steel. Not sure what but they should clean up well with lots of elbow grece. Are you after m or non m as only the m ones come off easily.

They are M back boxes. Would you suggest getting them chromed while they are off the car, or not to bother really?

Thanks for your reply!

Depends how deep your pockets are. I would either take them to a metal finishers to get them polished or take the time and do them myself.

With this option you can re polish them. If you get them chromed and it chips your in the poo

Haha I didn't know this!! What tips do you do??

I’d get them powder coated black or dark grey as they look like cows udders under the car. Really bad design that doesn’t suit the lines of the car imo 🐄

I got my old backbox that I removed from my old Z4 canny shiny with just sandpaper, wire wool and Autosol metal polish. I have altered the internals and is now on my Coupe and sounding and looking awesome ahaha

It’s just it can chip. And they are slung under the car with s**t hitting them all day! But if your in the industry and can get it done and then done again and again for free then do it.
