Back axle oils.

I saw a post about what oils to use in the manual gearbox and back axle, but I left confused having read it a few times...

As previously stated my car is a glorious shopping trolley and rarely goes further than asda most days and an occasional meet, or any excuse I can find for a jolly, so I will put in halfords/comma 75/80 ap4 in the gearbox, but it seems to suggest the same for the back axle, which I'm. Also happy but curious as what everyone's thoughts are.
 
I have to say you lot make me smile, if someone asked a First World problem like which version of wheels shall I have to match my rear .spoiler, heaven forbid someone asks how low to drop his suspension and you will debate it for months. I ask what oil for a back axle and a silence descends that wouldn't embarrass pharoas tomb. :D

To get the debate going first off you are bothered enough to want to change the gearbox & diff oil why not at least use a premium brand fluid :? granted you may not be doing galactic mileage or thrashing it from the off at Santa Pod but you clearly are concerned enough to consider the task worthy .
A quick check on the Millers oils web page suggests you use different spec oils ( id take their opinion over Halfords :roll: )

Thank you Mr wilks, I see your happy enough with 75/80 so just not happy with comma? Both are ap4 spec, do you also agree the same oil will go in the manual gearbox too?

I'm no oil expert , whenever i need any whether its diff,autobox,manual box or engine i simply input my vehicle details on Millers webpage then order the stuff from either Opie or off ebay & get my indy to do the change
Ive no clue what the Comma stuff costs but can't be much of a saving
 
Do you know the quantities of each you need? I am about to order the oil for mine and not sure how much of each I will require? :oops:
 
If it meets the right specs it should be fine. 75w80 GL4 in the box and 75w90 GL5 in the diff. I have the Millers linked above in my box and Fuchs oil in the diff.

In regards quantities, get 2x 1l bottles of each. You'll possibly get away with one, but I found both slightly over 1l (about 1.2l in the box and 1.1l diff, if I remember correctly)
 
Hi RW. I changed my gearbox and diff oils back in April 2017. I always use Castrol oils in my vehicles and so used Castrol Syntrans B75W (API GL-4, ZF TE-ML 11) in the gearbox and Syntrax Long Life 75W-90 (API GL-5, ZF TE-ML 05A,12B,17B,19C,21A, BMW Non LS Rear Axles) in the diff. The diff took exactly one litre and the gearbox slightly more. The car was on stands and level. I've done almost 18k miles since then with no issues. :thumbsup:
 
You gave people 41/2 hours on a wednesday afternoon, not sure many people would be on the forum at that time. :) :rofl:
