Not for me but read on..

Being a car nut several friends often ask me for input/help when buying cars. One close friend has a VW Up on pcp which is about to end after 4 years. She wanted a small easy to live with car as a replacement and most manufacturers (VW included) have stopped making very small cars. Cut to the chase and she’s signed up for a run out Aygo X, pre reg on 13 miles for £15k or £160 per month. I think that’s a great deal and a surprisingly pleasant small car.

But it’s got me thinking. The replacement is a £21k auto hybrid that scares the living daylights out of her, the pcp on that was £219, VW could only offer a polo at £220 and that too is a run out model. What are folk like this going to be forced to buy in 5 or 10 years time? Something considerably more expensive with technology they don’t want that functions in a way that makes them feel uncomfortable.

That's one of the things I like about my 20 year old E90, it doesn't have any of those "nanny" systems. :D

The nannying systems are annoying on modern cars, but.....they can all be turned off if you want. Admittedly you do have to do it every time you drive but it's not the end of the world. The 'auto on' for all the nannying stuff is only on cars built from mid 2024. Before that they are just advisory alerts, which can be ignored or switched off permanently.

The wife's Focus was built early 2024 so it has all the shite but it isn't intrusive. The lane departure thing and speed limit bong are set to OFF permanently.
And being a Ford, the speed sign recognition camera misses more than half anyway! :)

My Audi was built later in 2024, so all the shite is intrusive (with very loud bongs every ten seconds for something), but it becomes second nature to turn it all off when getting in the car. It takes about 10 seconds.
 
So long as manufacturers keep sticking a petrol engine in with a manual box then I can put up with the rest of the fripperies.

I must admit having a full digital dash on the i20N compared to my M140i made the BMW feel pretty dated. The problem will be I just think today's cars will be a nightmare in 10 or 15 years time with out of date software and electrical glitches. No different to a mobile phone or a laptop with a limited use life.

I fully agree.

It's when all of the connectivity/security standards drop off, and they're all left open to attack - that'll be fun. Remember - telnet, MD5 and TLS 1.1 all used to be considered secure once - but computer software is much easier to upgrade than a car that's been out of production/dealer support for the last xx years. Even if the hardware still works, I bet they turn into driving security nightmares after a while.
