Avro Vulcan B.2

Stunning - beautifully deafening beast in the air when they flew

Fantastic aircraft, the last time I saw Vulcan was in about 1992 when the official RAF display aircraft did it's final shows in the UK, I was was on a headland at Brean off Weston-Super-Mare where it was performing at the local Air base, it came out to sea at low level, turned it's nose up and did a full burn climb right above me THUNDER and HELL! The ground literately shook - it made quite an impression.

My dad did 22 years in the RAF, but finished when I was a baby. The Vulcan was his all time favourite plane, so went to a few air shows to see them in action when I was a kid. An awesome spectacle. The sound of them in the air was epic. Great memories... thanks for reminding me Citation 650!

Louder than Carolm's paint, went to school in Poynton in the late 70's which is a few miles from Woodford, from there we could hear and feel the power of these beasts at full thrust on takeoff :D

Remember these from RAF Scampton in the 70's, 617 and 27 Sqn (my father's sqn). Fantastic aircraft, and great to see one flying again (XH558); details of the campaign to keep it flying are here

+1 It was great to see it as part of the air display at FoS, I think it was in 2010 IIRC, as I've not been for a couple of years.

used to see them fly over northumberland as a kid... fantastic sight....... Was also very lucky to be taken to ne allowed on an raf airbase when i was 10 to witness them receiving their first harrier jumpjet and watching the display for the pilots who were going to fly them.. fantastic

Interesting site. I use to be a B-52 instructor with the 93rd Bomb Wing stationed at Castle Air Force base. (Before SAC was disbanded) While the BUFF is big, you have to stand under this Vulcan to really appreciate how massive it is.

This one is on loan from the Royal Air Force's 44 Squadron. (Since 1981) It was based at RAF. Waddington, Lincolnshire. SN XM805 Model 698.

When the Falklands war started in 1982, Her Majesty's Government sent a crew to "borrow" some its parts. A few months later, they returned them.

Little known fact that British Airways programmed the inertial navigation systems for these for the Falklands run... There was a nice plaque in the lab when I was training

I saw it a few years ago at Cambridge Airport, as part of an air display put on Marshalls Aerospace for their staff. The noise was simply amazing - I can only imagine when it approached fully loaded with nuclear warheads you'd have been truely crapping yourself. The maneouvarability of such a hefty plane was impressive as well - the climb on full afterburner was music to the ears :)
