I had the same with the K&N filter, Makes a horrible noise when it collapses the fins.

Swapped to the MANN filter and been fine ever since.

Yep. The Bosch filter was REALLY hard to pull off the cage which confirms my suspicions. Unusual for Bosch to get it wrong though, admittedly.

I had it when my local bmw dealer changed my oil, so not sure it’s just down to the filter, could be a housing design issue.

I suppose it is partly, but the Bosch filter is a much tighter fit over the cage (the plastic basket that is attached to the lid of the filter housing) so that once the element is in place, it can’t rotate.

Then as you screw the lid on and the filter gets compressed against the bottom of the filter housing, the whole filter element twists. It’s this action that seems to damage the fins with the resultant noise. It’s not really clear if it compromises its filtration performance but it’s certainly not ideal.

The MANN filter (and perhaps others) turns easily on the basket so that when you tighten the lid down, the basket is free to turn inside the filter element.

Hope that makes sense!

Now, just for the hell of it, playing devil’s advocate, if the Mann filter does not grip the basket (tube) will this not let some oil pass through the filter housing unfiltered? :poke:

I didnt think the Bosch filter seemed tight to get onto the housing. But after watching a few youtube vids on changing the filter, it didnt 'click' into place . I also found that I was able to screw the filter by hand to the 'almost' stop and final nip with the filter tool to finish off. I guess I will listen for any noises , but wonder if the filter is clogged from the new oil breaking up any sludge or debris and the media in the filter catching this than letting it flow through ?

Ever since I've had a set of brand new Bosch HT leads for my MR-2 fall apart in my hands I've not rated them. Not surprised at your problem here.

Honestly I’ve been using Bosch products for the last 20yrs and can probably count on one hand how many problems I’ve had. They probably just didn’t foresee this when they spec’d it.

You would be correct if it was so slack that there was a physical gap, but there isn’t.
