AUX installation concern - Sorted!

Hi,

I decided to install an aftermarket AUX socket in my 2003 Z4 - the radio unit has the BMW navigation system.


I've tried two AUX sockets now, after installation the radio is not recognising the AUX when navigating through the mode option.


Not sure if I am missing something simple or if coding is required, has anyone experienced a similar concern?

The car was fitted with a Parrot when I purchased it just over eleven months ago, I have removed this successfully.


Any guidance towards completing a successful install would be really appreciated.

AUX block should just plug straight into the main loom and block on the back of your head unit and be recognised (no coding needed). Unless the Parrot has screwed something up.

Do you have a picture of the back of the headunit?

This is what I have done, the AUX plug has been put straight in the main loom socket on the back of the head unit.


The radio still works and the single CD player still operates.

So, if I remember correctly the two lower 12 pin sockets are for the CD changer and the other is for the Aux. Make sure your AUX plug is on the correct one.

It should be the one on the bottom right, below the 10 amp fuse.

^ this. When I plugged mine in I think it went straight into the CD changer block which you obviously don’t have.

I plugged the AUX connector into the 12-pin socket below the 10-A fuse.
I'm a little confused, BumpyZ4 advises that the two lower 12-pin sockets are for the CD changer? Where is the other socket for the AUX?

Some confusion here - Inkey$ says plug into the cd changer block, BumpyZ4 says plug into the other one.

The left hand (according to your picture) 12 pin socket is for cd changer. If you have a cd changer, pins 2,8 and 9 will be occupied.
The right hand plug is for aux (pins 3,4 and 10), nav (5,9 and 11) and tel (6 and 12).

If you don’t have nav and tel, then the bottom right socket might be empty in which case you can plug your aux directly in there.

You may have the wrong type of aux, since the original is not wired for usb which requires a separate power source. The correct aux should have 3 wires into a 4 pin plug at the aux end (pins 2,3 and 4). Pin 2 connects to pin 10 of the 12-pin socket, pin 3 to pin 4 and pin 4 to pin 3. The wire between pin 2 and pin 10 should have a resistor somewhere along it, without which the radio will not recognise the input source.

Since yours is an aftermarket you have to make sure that it has the correct built in resistance value (300K ohms). See this thread.

Pleased to say this is now resolved, I have received some excellent advice & help.
I checked the loom that was in the car, it appeared that part of the original Parrot installation was well hidden in the car - so I removed this.


I reached out to Rory at fruity-car-cables via e-bay - Rory advised exactly what I needed for my Z4 set-up (BMW Bluetooth and BMW SatNav) and he produced & shipped me a tailored AUX cable for £15 within 48 hours.
I installed this today with success, I also have the SatNav voice now working (this has not worked since I purchased the car last April).


Thank you to everyone that gave input on this topic. My advice is to reach out to fruity-car-cables if anyone is thinking of installing an AUX, Rory was extremely knowledgeable and really helpful in determining what I needed.

Excellent result. So what did you have to do at the back of the radio? If you have sat nav and a cd changer, then both of the 12 pin sockets are occupied. Did you have to pin in?

The red, white & black connectors plug into pins 3, 4 & 10 on the lower right 12-pin connector. This enabled me to keep the original Nav & Bluetooth.
I just need to improve the sound quality, possibly with a with a new iPhone / 3.5 AUX cable.

Which colour goes in which pin? I tried red 3, white 4 and black 10 with no luck
