AUX-In & USB Problem

A brief history: Had the car (2010 23i) for 9 months, used iPhone 4S & 5 with Y-Connector into the USB & Aux-in ports which worked perfectly to charge & play / control music from head unit. In the 2 - 3 months leading up to Christmas it started to cut out intermittently, requiring unplugging & plugging back in to resume charge/play. Became frequent so bought a new Y-Connector thinking this was at fault; same symptoms. Also checked with several different iPhones so it's not the phone at fault.

Eventually the re-plugging in stopped working & it would only work infrequently so car went into BMW firstly in January.

It's now in for the FOURTH time (they've been great with free courtesy cars, have a 328i Tourer today, very impressive car & love the engine!!). So far they've replaced (to the best of my memory / knowledge) the USB port itself, the wiring loom and today the control unit as well as checking it has the latest software. Just had a call to say they are stumped as cant get it working

They've submitted a diagnostic report to BMW Germany for them to look at & will call me with the outcome...

Anyone experienced anything similar?? No idea what will happen if they can't find the problem?? I've not played music in the car for months now & it's driving me nuts!!

Thanks for listening to the rant lol!!!

It wasn't, but has worked perfectly until the issue started. They've also tested with different cables. Additionally, the iPhone wont charge any more using the Apple cable :(

There have been many issues with copies across all BMW models that can use them
Some work some don't
The genuine BMW item does work ..............your choice

Ummmm well it doesn't on my car as they've tested it with their own cable so cable not at fault...

I get what your saying if everything else worked ok, but the Apple USB doesn't even draw power to charge the phone anymore either...

Might be the USB socket is dead

ah just seen they have replaced that

Did you get this sorted, correctly working usb/aux socket now... if not I have read the sa6fl factory fitted option, if you fail with power to it ,
has to do with the combox earthing before sending data to the CIC and can only be diagnosed that way.. so it might be a faulty combox.

I have very similar problems. Bought my E89 as approved used earlier this year & from when I first got it the USB socket has been intermittent whether using with iPhone/Y-cable or just for a USB stick. Sometimes will just not work, then the next day it's fine again.

Keep meaning to head to the dealer as under warranty but haven't got around to it yet!

My USB port is the same. Bought the car new in January this year. After a few weeks it only worked some of the time and then died completely a couple of months ago. Keep intending to drop the car in at the dealers.
