Aux in? or not?

On a mission to get a cassette tape option into the Zed I'm considering the options.
A DIN unit to replace the main console is gonna be a no-no due to the sheer amount of work and faffing about.
Was hoping to mod the space underneath or over the top of the DVD player in the rear console but that's gonna be a chew also.

Planning to utilise a nice vintage Walkman I've just procured which sounds insane! Really, I have a Nakamichi Dragon and the SQ from this old Sony WM-D3 is pretty comparable!

So what are my options?
I have the Carver Navi/DSP system.
The CD changer input is used by a factory iPod prep/cable which I use with a BT dongle to stream from an Android phone.
Am I able to install an aux-in panel any other way, without replacing the iPod input? (I understand the factory aux-in uses the CD changer input (?)

Need to get tapes recorded on this....

You can have aux and a cd changer, but from memory I think there is an issue with having the oem iPod kit and aux.

Cassette tape? Good God you will be thinking of vinyl next!

I can understand your derision chaps, and I know many others won’t ‘get it’, but this thread isn’t about justifying my enthusiasm for music played via tape.
You can try and bash me all you like over on the tapeheads.net forum (ChrisNAK), which I understand has a MUCH larger membership than this forum.

Not taking the wee wee but just don’t understand what it’s for as most things seem to available on tinterweb nowadays and all I remember of tapes is they seem to end up knackered.

Call it a ‘sound signature’ thing if you will.

Look how vinyl made a comeback. It’s a vastly inferior medium to CD but yet for all its pops, crackles and other susceptibilities people have gone back to it in their droves for its particular sound signature.

Same with tape. If you invest in decent gear and I’m very fortunate to have found some top end gear to both record and playback on, then the playback experience can be highly rewarding/satisfying.
A recent haul of 84 new, sealed Sony Metal XR cassettes has secured the longevity for my interest in the medium. Nobody manufactures metal tapes anymore!

I also like the ‘mechanicalness’ of it. Coming from an engineering background and being of an age when I can remember drooling over such decks as the Nakamichi Dragon as a nipper and marveling at its’ technical prowess but not being able to acquire one until my late 40’s is also highly rewarding.

Of course tape has it’s caveats and deficiencies and that’s part of the reason it fell out of fashion but it’s also part of the character of the sound signature and of course nostalgia plays a part too of course

Don’t get me wrong, I also like listening to digital music and have some nice gear that can play back the highest resolution 32bit DsD files. It’s the closest replication of what was mastered in the recording studio! But at the end of the day it’s just nice to have the choice of what to listen to.

TBH if you aren't rocking a phonograph I don't even want to know you. Sure, it means I can't carry any passengers, the windy-handle digs into the seat leather and the brass horn etches the windscreen but if I can't listen to Antonio Scotti or Enrico Caruso at 78 speed, well, I might as well just give up.

Hi
Can’t help u with your question, but, a Nakamichi Dragon - nice!
Had to settle for a Yamaha back in the day...

My initial reaction was 'What has Chris been smokin' this time?' until I remembered listening to Dire Straits 'Alchemy Live' double cassette on Cr02 (chromium dioxide?) tape on my walkman as a teenager. The sound was fantastic, you really felt you were there in the crowd.
Good luck with your 'project'

The Dragon was a lucky score. They don’t come up for sale that often and the purchase cost of this one was well into a 4 figure number :o :o but it came with the benefit of being overhauled and re-calibrated by a renowned tech over here in The Netherlands in 2017. I’ve had contact with him and he’s advised it should be good for another 20 years if well looked after

Xactly!
It gives certain dynamics that digital files just can’t.

I’m old enough to remember buying 78s. One of the first was Harry Belafonte singing Island In The Sun on one side and Coconut Woman on the other. I’ve been through vinyl and tape and all had their problems. Listening to classical music on vinyl was a nightmare. During the quieter passages you had the pop and crackle ensemble for company. The resurgence in vinyl is a complete mystery to me. Apparently a lot of people like the sleeves which is about the only good thing that can be said about it. CDs where a huge step forward. For convenience my whole CD collection is ripped to Apple Lossless and stored on my iPad. I can play it wirelessly through my hi fi system while using my ancient but still rather good Spendor SP1 speakers.

Progress isn’t always bad. Going back in time isn’t always good. Rickets was’t anything to look forward to! 😉
