AUX DIY

Guys, ive had a little pickle with my install and could do with some help...

Basically i installed the wires from the AUX (mini/E39 version) into my CD changer connector fine in what i believed to be the correct positions. However the radio didnt show me the AUX mode.

I unplugged everything to check, and with a multimeter found that ONLY the Brown wire is showing a connection to the Base (opposite to the tip) of the 3.5mm Jack! The Red/Blue wires dont seem to be connected!? Does this sound at all correct? Looks as though ill be butchering the cable tomorrow anyway!

If anyone has any photos of their final CD Changer/Aux connector pinout it would be greatly appreciated

Right then, after looking at the pinout, ive noticed that im trying the wrong port!! Some people on here said that they combined the AUX IN with the CD Changer connector but this isnt the case! Its actually the TV/Nav/Phone connector (the lower right!!) :roll:

Aux Pins:
Connector C
Pin 3 = TV L+
Pin 4 = TV R+
Pin 10 = TV L/R-

The problem now arises that my Z has the TV, Nav and Bluetooth Phone so will have a play with the input to make sure there is no interference. Ill have to get my soldering iron out!

Had no problem with mine, the aux cable just plugged into the head unit - the multichanger is wired separately so didn't have to merge any wires across connectors... took 5 mins once I'd figured the vent removal out :evil:

Sounds great from my iPhone - super clear and tons of bass, guess that's the Carver system at it's best..!

Right I've read this thread and feel its time to take upon this challenge and that making my own cable seems like a cheap and simple option. If it fails its not cost me much either!

To confirm I currently have the BMW Business CD Player and 6 CD Changer installed so I need to fit the Aux connection into the existing CD Changer connection. Can someone confirm the pins to connect too? As below?

Pin 3 - TVL+
Pin 4 - TVR+
Pin 10 - TVL/R- (aka common)

So all being right from what I gather from this thread, I wire my 3-core cable into those pins, a jack on the other end and into my MP3player/ipod and away I go?!

Some people have been giving out wrong info mate - the AUX DOESN'T use the CD changer plug. Look at my diagram from Page 7. The connector you want (C) probably wont have a plug unless you have the TV or some other auxiliary connection (BT Phone?) Worth having a look at the radio, a finding a 12 pin plug may be hard.

I just assumed the plug that was there was the CD changer - not meaning to cause any confusion - seems it must be the Bluetooth system I had to merge with

OK cheers for pointing that one out, that would have caused a bit of confusion! I have bluetooth so suspect I do have one of these plugs, not that it should make much difference. I endeavour to have a further look at the weekend....

OK after having a quick look and establishing the tiny 'bootlace' crimps I have are still too big for the job I need to try and source some of the BMW square crimps, are these available from BMW or am I best paying a visit to a breaker to acquire a few? It will make life much easier once I have crimps that fit into the connector block! I did crimp the bootlaces onto my jack lead and plugged in an MP3 player and attempted to hold the crimps onto the terminals but must not have had them on properly as cycling through the mode button didn't achieve anything. I presume once you have the aux connection connected with an MP3 player on it when you cycle through the mode button you get FM/CD head unit/CD Changer/Aux? Or similar....

Will it allow my iphone to charge and play music through out the car?

charging only with something like this

but yes play through the AUX socket is through car speakers

You might be better off with a Intravee or similar - but there are other experts here for those systems

I have my IPOD mounted in my car and it is powered...

I have changed the location of the mount from were it was mounted in the thread to this now...
I cut off the cigarette lighter power connector and wired it directly into the fuse box.

OK guys I've finally found suitable pins and time to make my aux connector. A bit of soldering and bodgering about I have my cable... however... I have hooked it up to the pins as suggested 3, 4 and 10 (on lower right hand plug) but nothing... I have tested the cable and its fine. Secondly I thought I'd try and hook it up to the CD changer input. So plugging it into that and it works fine... So at the moment I can't fathom how to get both? The radio will not detect any input when I connect it to the pins as suggested on the lower right-hand plug. My current thoughts are to put it in parallel with the CD changer and put a switch into the circuit. Not exactly very prestige or what I want to do. Does anyone have any suggestions or solutions?

Try shorting R and L with a 330kOhm resistor.

Where did you get the pins you used to hook the cable up to the head unit? And do you have any pictures?

I got mine from an electronics shop, floppy disc drive connector pins seem to fit. I've yet to get my cable recognised by the head unit yet. After spending some time soldering in the capacitors and resistors and it not working I got annoyed and threw it all in a heap in the boot! I may have to attempt removing the capacitors and just trying it with the resistor to see if that produces a better result.

You have pulled the two little metal tabs in the middle of each vent down haven't you? There is some instructions on here some place...

Two capacitors in series and a resistor in parallel... No luck there?! Once the vents are out once they come out a second and a third time a lot easier!
