AUX cable to OEM stereo

evening all

can you run an aux cable into the back of the OEM business stereo with CD?

i don't think it has bluetooth and would be nice to connect the phone to it to make calls and listen to music on the phone.

anyone done this?

car is E85 06 Z4M coupe. thanks

Yes it’s easy. But please clarify, you say your car is a E85 06 Z4M coupe?

If it is indeed a post-facelift of any sort, are you sure it doesn’t have aux already. It will be under the centre of the dash, immediately above and to the right of the ashtray.

If it has the aux channel on the radio, then you will have an aux input under the dash where I said. You just need an adapter cable to connect your phone which you can buy cheap off eBay.

You will find that some members have retro installed Bluetooth as well, if you search the threads.

I’m very surprised because the aux option doesn’t come up on the radio unless you have the aux wiring fitted (it has a resistor in it which the radio detects). Either way, you will have a blank panel where my aux is, this just pops out. You can buy a second hand aux panel with wiring, which you should be able to plug straight into the back of the radio.

Yes I have the blank panel.

Any idea where I could get one from with the aux input and wiring? No idea where to look

pics of the cable that was behind the blank panel

is that the aux lead?

Could be, but the plug looks more like it’s the aerial cable. What’s the red wire there?

You really need to hoik out the radio and see what’s plugged in the back. It’s not a difficult task, but be careful with your piano black trim.

Oh, and best place to look for an aux panel is on eBay.

yeah i think you are right and more like an aerial cable Zedebee. see pics. the red cable seems to go nowhere and has been cut.

it could be from the old pioneer DAB thing it had jammed in there when I bought it with the flip out screen, it was awful.

will get some pics of the back of the radio and post up.

pics of the back of the stereo. useful vids on you tube on how to get vents out and then the radio.

all looks like OEM plugs on the back. not sure where the AUX input would go though?

on the right must be the plug in for the radio/antenna?

The black plug (front right in you picture) is currently wired up for cellular telephone, should be pins 6 and 12. Aux would wire up to pins 3,4 and 10. If you’re not using the telephone capability you can simply unplug the black plug and plug in your new aux cable; else you can take the pins out of your new aux plug and pin them in the black plug. It depends on how your new aux is terminated really.

thanks do you mean the second picture with the white n purple wire in?

no using the telephone capability so could unplug that and plug in new aux cable.

BMW do offer a set up with the cable and ability to attach the aux input to the removable facia.

part number is 65120153502

is that the right one to go for?

The bottom picture (IMG-0519), the plug with the black/white and black/brown wires.
The part number you quoted is the correct “official” retrofit part according to RealOEM although it’s an expensive option.

perfect got it now

what other routes could I go?

just buy an AUX cable with the male connector? and then another cable with female connector which then goes into the normal I phone connection?

or maybe sth like this with Aux in and USB?

Links are both the same? I can’t say whether they are any good, but I do know you won’t be able to charge off the usb without rigging up a power feed from somewhere (beyond my expertise).

There is one of these just come up on eBay:

Then depending on your phone, you just need one of these or similar:
