Autotrader

Hi

Reluctantly am currently selling my z4 due to getting a dog, family etc which has made the Z4 completely impractical and have bought a 1 series to replace it. Keeping 2 cars wasnt really option unfortunately given that both me and my wife tube it to work...

I've never sold a car via autotrader before however put the z4 on there 2 weeks ago given the wide audience....however am having real problems shifting it. I dropped the price to £8,800 recently a week ago as I got literally zero calls and have now lowered it further to £8,500 - am I being completely unrealistic in my expectations? Appreciate that a 2003 plate is old however mileage is low for that age (48k miles) and is 3 litre, has satnav, heated seats and a lot of extras. Would welcome any thoughts on whether I'm being impatient and whether it does actually take a few weeks to sells cars on Autotrader; also would welcome views on whether my price is wrong

I had mine on Autotrader for five weeks
I got one call, I dropped the price following over the phone negotiation and then sold it
There is an over supply of Z4s, relative to buyers
There are many who are desperate to sell and so the price range is 7k to 9k

The big problem I found was the cost of extra insurance for the Z4 having moved my main policy to my new car
The Z4 was costing £100 pm for insurance

Good luck

Your add would not inspire me to give you a call .You need to take out the waffle ie electric windows, power steering ,radio new battery ect.Take some better pics ie on your drive ,take it for a run to get rid of the rusty discs, wheels look a bit ropey also.M.O.T?
You need to show the car is cared for ,this add to me shows the opposite ,maybe thats why you are not getting any response.I hope this helps.

I'm not sure I'd agree too much with Maxman, apart from the rusty discs.....at this age you're appealing to a different market and I think the simple answer is that the lack of responses tells you that (i) big-engined cars probably aren't selling well at the moment because of insurance/fuel costs, (ii) people aren't buying at the moment because of financial constraints. Whichever way you look at it, that means its too expensive.

I've priced it up on three different valuation sites including Parkers and that money looks to be dealer forecourt, which you ain't going to get.

My humble opinion is price it at 7995 and expect to go down to anywhere from 500-1000 to get a sale.

I think the market is prime at the moment, no sign of anything thats going to improve it and as summer wastes away so will your selling price.....but its a well-spec'd car and should sell if the price is right and you are realistic.

Good luck.

I can't say I'm a fan of Autotrader anymore. The last two cars I've sold I put on PH for free and then after a week or two ebay. Both of them sold via ebay - people calling and asking can they come see it and end the auction early if they like it. I was really sceptical about putting something of that value on ebay but it worked - and if it doesn't go through as the auction closing I think you avoid some of the fees (just mark it as sold via another media).

Thanks for the reply lacroupade, in particular for your views on price. I had a call last night from someone about it so it seems that my price is just getting into the right territory though might still be a bit toppy as you suggest.

What can I do about the discs without incurring a reasonable bill? Have no problem spending money if I'm going to recoup it in the sale (fixed it a few things in the last month myself in order to help selling it) however am not inclined to spend money when its debatable whether I'd get it back....
