My shift knob is a little scratched where previous owner must have had ring on finger and liked tapping on top of shifter. Anyway I can buy new one from bmw for about $75. Its an automatic does anyone know how much of pain in the @#$% it is to change and how to do the job?

Pretty sure you can just buy the trim

Nope, you can't - not listed as a separate part. Taking the trim off the recondition it doesn't work either - I know because I actually did take it off on my last car and bust a few clips that aren't supposed to come apart. See this thread :

Taking the knob off is easy - two hands, grasp & pull straight up. Just don't lean your head over else you could end up with a bloodied nose :D
