Autoglym headlight restorer

Hey guys,

After watching Chris Fix's video on how to restore your headlights https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UEJbKLZ7RmM
I went out to buy the stuff, but couldn't find the gloss spray in my local Homebase.

Wanting to do it the same day, I decided to pop next door to Halfords and get the Autoglym headlight restoration complete kit, which costed around the same (£25) http://www.halfords.com/motoring/car-cleaning/car-cleaning-kits/autoglym-headlight-restoration-complete-kit

I found it works great. I used the various grits of sandpaper, and there's still loads left. See the results below. I took photos at various stages. I'm still tempted to get the gloss spray that Chris used in his video though, but for now it looks so much better. What do you think?

Funnily enough I was just doing this to the screen on my zx10r... With Colgate toothpaste, baby wipes and water :oops:

Yes I've heard about the toothpaste method. If anyone here fancies and easy kit to get going, I can recommend the Autoglym I used - very easy and simple instructions.
 
On my old Focus I just used to use polish (Autoglym Super Resin Polish). Also had the advantage of leaving a wax coating. I just did it each time I a couple of times a year and it was fine.
 
Huge improvement! Nice job.

You have reminded me that this should be on my list of to do's.
 
If you are in the black country west mids area i can recommend "detailedbyandrew" he is a mobile detailer who did my headlights for me. Took the effort out of doing it myself and the worry of catching the paint with the rotary pads.
 
Just seen this, that's a great result.
I think it will be worth applying a sealant to protect the finish.

Something else to add to the post MOT and service to-do list this spring.

The kit is under £19 with free delivery on amazon at the moment
 
Hadn't seen this either but its a cracking result well done. Im with the above though, Id put some sealant on it to protect it from UV as any factory stuff on the lens has been sanded away.

I've finished headlights with toothpaste in the past. Cut headlights back with wet and dry - work your way down to 2000 grit keep it wet and work by hand - little detergent in the water helps. Then use either T cut; Brasso; Mothers polish; or toothpaste on a soft cloth. You may well have enough stuff at home to do this and can save the petrol costs to Halfords!

Haven't done the Zed but this is a Clio I did for test last year

I assume a couple of coats of clear lacquer afterwards are advisable? Mine don't look bad but might do this to kill some time one day!

tbh I don't bother - if you do it in summer its a nice hour and a half well spent in the sun! and I would expect to get at least a couple of years before they start to look dull again. My logic says it either more expense or a sit down outside on a nice day :D
