Last week I was driving up the A34 when I noticed white smoke billowing out of the rear of my 03 Z4. No warning lights but I pulled over immediately and when the smoke cleared cracked the bonnet for a look, alas nothing obvious. On speaking to my local mechanic I drove it gingerly to the garage (no more smoke) and left it for diagnosis. Apparently the gearbox gasket had popped and covered the hot metal with oil, thus the smoke. What seems to have happened was the oil pump had seized and this had caused the gasket to blow, and BMW's resolution to this... a new gearbox. Thankfully my garage is an independent who uses an automatic gearbox specialist so new pump, new gaskets and the car should be ready to pick up later today.....
