Autobox question

Hey

I'm still I'm the hunt for my 1st z4.

I keep coming across 3.0 auto's ne'er actually went and looked at one yet.

Does the Autobox have tiptronic style switching? I understand the smg has paddles on the wheel but does the outo have a tip style selector on the gear stack or is it just a stick in drive?

Pre-facelift is a 5 speeder and has D, S and +/- but no paddles.

Post-facelift is a 6 speeder and additionally has selectors on the wheel, +/- on each side, not paddles in the usual sense.
 
Auto connected to a 3.0 is an amazing combo.
With a bit of effort you can retrofit paddles to the prefacelift. I have them.
Drive one to see if it does it for you.
 
I have the E86 3.0i with the 6 speed auto. It's a brilliant engine/gearbox combo and the paddles on the steering wheel make for an awesome drive!

Highly recommended.. :thumbsup:

If nothing else, give one a drive. Your want to take it home :D
 
I have a 3.0Si auto with paddles. I like shifting using the lever more, but irrespective the box is great and as Taz says you should go drive one.

If you do you need to know that pressing the sport button but staying in full auto will result in the car downshifting to a lower gear, and it will keep it a gear lower than normal. Put it into manual and you have full control - it will only shift down on it's own when your speed drops significantly, i.e. too slow for that gear, or shift up if you redline it. Needs played with but lots of fun :D
 
I've got paddles and shift but to be honest, I only ever turn sport mode on and off. The box is so good, you'll soon get fed up of using the fiddly bits once the novelty is gone :D

Just use the kick down and sport mode if I need to shift it quicker than it already goes anyway.

Never thought I'd like auto. Got two now and never want a manual ever again.
 
Cheers guys, this has been really helpful as i wasnt really conidering autos but ill now give em a shot i reckon.

Is the shift pretty snappy when done through the +/-? The only car ive driven with a similar box was an old Mitsubishi FTO with a tiptronic box and it was great fun to drive with really punch changes.

Im guessing as technology has moved on a bit by rights it should be similar if not better?
 
Got an auto in my coupe and i don't regret it for a second,modern auto's are a far cry from the stick it in D and away you go,i very rarely use the buttons but tend to use the sport button when i'm on a bit of a hoon :thumbsup:
 
I have always had manuals, BUT......... I tested 3.0 manual, and 3.0 auto on the same day... Same spec and Wow, totally won over.

2 days later bought the auto, love it, fast responsive, press the sport button for extra grin!! :D
