I've had two manual E89's, getting an auto next week.

Loved the auto on a test drive, that's why I went for it.

Final decision next week!

We've ordered the manual, as we weren't over impressed with the auto on the test drive especially for the extra money! Our 330d touring is auto though and lovely!

Ideally I'd probably go for a manual but my car didn't come with that option. However as above the new auto boxes are a great improvement over the previous 6 speed option.

It's all a personal preference and if your not sure trying both is best. I'm sure a dealer would be able to show you both versions out on the open road.

Don't like the auto, happy with the manual, happiest with the DCT - can't see that choice though?

Auto boxes always have that slight 'elastic band' feel to the throttle... like you accelerate but it does not feel 'direct'.... can always feel the treacle stirring.

The DCT has the direct feel of the manual box, but with the speed of change & paddle shift bonuses.

Best of both worlds combined into something even better - there is a reason DCT boxes are fitted to virtually all high performance cars nowadays.

Auto for me, I've never liked manual BMW's because I've always found the pedals were offset to the right.

I now have my second 35is with DCT and, in all, this makes the fourth car for which I've had such a 'box. They require to be 'learned' as the driving style needs to be quite different from a manual transmission. IMHO the effort to adapt to driving one is well worth the effort.

Have the DCT and it's great. It solves many of the problems I have with the standard auto box.
I do miss the manual gearbox though. The paddles just don't feel as satisfying as a proper manual shift.

The standard auto is something I would never subject myself.

Before buying the car I was indifferent about DCT/Manual and I don't think anything has changed.

When I bought my X5 in in 2007, it was the first automatic car I had owned and I was worried. Now though, I would never have a car with a manual gearbox, although I can understand why some people prefer a manual box in a sports car. My Z4 has the DCT and I love it.

Company car is an auto which is great as do high mileage. But got to be a manual for weekend and holiday fun :driving:
