Auto transmission service

I have a 2010 sdrive23i - purchased 3 months ago with 48000m. Seems to me that it would be a good idea to get a transmission service - after all the fluid is now 11 years old - but I've read differing opinions as to whether or not it's a good idea. Sort of if it ain't broke don't fix it versus sealed for life means sealed until death. Any experiences/thoughts from the combined knowledge on here please?

Changing oils is never a bad idea providing it’s done properly and often that’s not easy for a DIY er.

For the ZF6HP box it’s recommended by the manufacturer of the box ZF to do a change circa 50k miles..

Several people supply full service kits which includes the integrated filter / pan

I would have a look to see if there are any DIY videos of such change, if not, let a independent do the job.
I think it's not as straight forward as draining and refilling.

Just had mine done last week, at 105k (and assume not done before). Didn't fancy DIYing that one (due to exact temperature requirements etc) but many people do.

Thanks for the thoughts guys - I'd already decided that an indy was the way to go. I don't have a lift so didn't relish crawling around underneath with hot oil dripping on me - I was aware of the temperature requirements for the final top up/drain. I 've found a ZF specialist close to me so I'll give them a call.

I'd leave it to a specialist, don't think even BMW are keen to do it. Always wondered about sealed for life, but life in manufacturers terms is probably the warranty period of the car. I spoke to a ZF specialist and was quoted £275+VAT for the gearbox service.
