Auto “S” mode question

Hi all
I’m really enjoying my Zd and love driving with the transmission over in “S” where the box changes automatically but at higher revs, my question is “when in “S” and you change down using the shifters the car stays in “S/M” is there anyway you can go back to “S” again without having to move the gear leaver right into “D” and the left again back into “S”?
I really hope this makes sense.🙈

I've never driven an E89 but in other modern paddleshift cars when they have paddles marked + and - on either side you can hold both paddles and the gearbox will revert back to auto.
 
Early e89 had + and - on both sides of the steering wheel (pull up + or push down -) but during production changed to + on one side and - on the other, as far as I am aware the only way to go back to auto is by knocking the gear selector back into the middle.
 
Thanks for the reply Chippie, that’s how Iv been doing it , mostly to put it into 7/8th when on a run as it seems to stay in 6th , thanks for the info
 
From memory if you downshift or upshift using the paddles whilst in Sport mode the box will automatically go back into full auto sport mode when the car feels it right to do the next gear change. It's only if you put the box into manual mode that it then needs a response from the driver to change to the next gear. I had an early E89 automatic and swapped to the later style steering wheel (proper paddles instead of buttons), no modifications needed, straight swap.
 
Thanks for that Zed Barron I also have the newer style sterling wheel, I’m enjoying the ride and pick up in comfort with the gear selector over to the left in sports auto for the higher revs seems smoother and less full on for me for daily driving. Cheers
 
I think Baron is right. If you leave the gear selector in auto mode but change gear using the paddles, it will revert back to auto when it feels it needs to change. I suspect the reason for this is so you can down shift for an overtake without needed to go to full manual mode.

Only way to be totally manual is to move across to manual mode.

Sport mode is the best mode, but for me i would like to be able to have the throttle response of sport mode in normal mode so the changes to still be quicker. Just for those days when you are pottering along.
 
On my X3 you just have to hold the gear up (maybe down works too) paddle for a few seconds and it goes back to fully auto.

I’ll try the same in the Z4 tomorrow and report back :)

Which gearbox are you talking about..ZF6HP, ZF8HP or DCT?
 
It’s not the duel clutch not sure about the others, it’s the 8 gear one in a 2014 28i , that’s all I know to be honest not had it long 👍🏻
 
In conclusion as mentioned earlier by Chippie I have found that once you have shifted whilst in“S”Auto into “M” the only way back into “S” is to move the shifter over to the right and back again.
 
I played with this a lot with the 35is (DCT box) - prepare for a ramble:

With the gear selector stick to the right (normal position) if in comfort / sport / sport+, using the paddles now & again (such as to drop a few gears for an overtake etc), the gearbox would indeed revert to auto mode after maybe 5 or 10 seconds after the throttle input relaxed a little.

But with the gear selector pushed to the left (same mode, but gearchanges maybe 2k revs higher) - using the paddles locked the box into manual mode. Even after coming to a standstill, or relaxed cruising for 5 minutes, the gear selection stays at whatever you have changed it to via the paddles. It never goes back to auto mode.

I tried various combinations of pulling both paddles / holding etc - have not found a way to revert to auto mode after I have used the paddles.

Following keenly if anyone has actually done it & knows for certain!
 
Just to make sure I wasn't mad - tried again last night.

Yes - with gearshifted to left & having picked a gear with the paddles - it does shift back to 1st when you stop.

BUT - it stays in M mode, and does not revert back to auto.

We are back where we started.

unless i am mistaken i thought that was by design. If you move it to manual mode it will stay there until you move it back to auto. In my opinion it would be very annoying if it reverted back to auto on its own (you moved it to manual because you wanted to use the paddles, not for it to automatically revert back).
 
I guess it's something that BMW could never be 'right' on for all users.

In my use case, I only occasionally use the paddles for very specific things & prefer auto mode 95% of the time.

But I do like the 'Sport' side of the gearbox (pushed to left) as it keeps the suspension soft & steering light, but shifts maybe 2k higher up the rev range.

I'm in this mode most of the time.

If I want to get a burst to overtake & hit the paddle - that's it - I'm stuck there in manual mode & have to clunk it to normal on the gearstick, then push it back to sport.

Just feels like a clumsy solution.
 
you can just press the sport button and the auto box will use sport mode. You can downshift while in auto (to overtake) and it will then revert back to auto.

Cheers Ray - yes I have played with that mode.

Problem is that fuel consumprion goes right up, the steering gets heavier, the suspension gets more bumpy.
