Auto Roof Open stopped working?

So, when i unlock the Z the roof has always auto-opening, unless i press and the hold unlock button to prevent it. Now, after disconeecting the battery to do some work in the passenger door and remove the airbag module and reconnect it, and then re-connect the battery, the auto-open has stopped working. i can press unlock and then double-press unlock and it'll open via the fob, but not do it automatically anymore, odd one, any ideas anyone? seems like something needs to be reset or relearnt for this to start working again.

Hi, are you saying that when you unlock the car your roof “auto operates” without pressing any buttons?
I’ve never heard of that before.

Yep, and it doesn’t have the gap tech module either. Usual operation is
Single press unlock, unlocks and roof drops down by itself
Double press unlock and hold on 2nd press, unlocks but roof stays up
Single press lock, locks and roof stays down
Triple press lock and hold on third press, locks and roof comes up but not windows
Triple press lock and hold again, windows come up

My guess is car has been coded at some point to do this.

That is some funky coding I’ve never seen-

I was going to suggest gaptech too- but no

You can use my Carly if you want to recode

Roof still works from the button?

Yep roof works fine like in the normal comfort mode, I think single press unlock and hold pressed roof drops ok. I just liked the auto roof down, very weird.

Hi, you mention the roof works fine in normal comfort mode - i don’t think the sport/comfort mode button has any influence on roof operation? Or do you mean something else?

Before disconnecting/reconnecting the main battery I could press unlock once on key fob and the roof would drop by itself (and there’s no gap-tech installed) but it’s stopped doing it, so assume I needed to,reset something, but no idea what.

Ok, but what’s the relevance of the “comfort mode” that you mentioned, what is that?

Comfort mode is where you can lower the roof via the key-fob, for our US friends this isn’t enabled by default but has to be coded in I believe

There is 100% a roof mod module installed. That’s not normal operation on any BMW.
I did originally think that, but can’t find one, having looked in the usual place (under the ash tray there’s nothing there), any ideas where other usual modules might get installed?

It’s installed in a wire loom under the roof or boot I believe. Google smart to install. You probably just need to reprogram it.

[ref]Oxtobyd[/ref], have you found it?
i've looked for an add-on module under the ash-tray area and nothing, also looked behind the passenger seat (behind the panels) and there's only the factory fitted roof control module, so nope not found any add-ons. the mystery continues. i vaguely recall when i first got the car about 2 years ago as a project it never used to lower the roof by itself, then one-day it just started doing it, and hence why i then figured out the button combo's for stop it lowering, forcing it to lower, and then raising it again all via the key-fob, but as noted it's stopped working again since disconnecting and reconnecting main battery.

That’s not where a mod is fitted though. You 100% have one installed.

If it’s the smarttop module it’s behind the passenger seat as described, and not there (see http://www.mods4cars.com/sms/db/smarttop/ext/support/manuals/bmw/STLFBW7/Archive/install_z4_v1_repin/en.php) if it’s the gap-tech then under the ash tray, also not there. Which other module is there so I can try and find it?

Update, I have no idea what’s changed other than I cleared some codes in ista (having done some work on the Vanos, so not related) and the auto top down on button opening now works again, and I couldn’t find a SmartTop or Gap-Tech module in the usual places, and didn’t look behind panels in the boot (because it’s started working), so I’ll chalk this up to a happy mystery.
