auto lights

Do you mean the auto lights as daytime running would be on all the time so light sensor would be irrelevant.
 
I read this as set to auto and the headlights dont come on when its dark.... Its easy to test....

Leave on auto and put your hand on the black patch towards the top centre of the windshield.... Within a few seconds the light should flick on. Same sensor as the rainsensor.

Check if you have bubbles forming in the black patch... If you have those its a new windshield needed.
