auto lights + wipers

I am trawling through autotrader etc in the search for a coupe and there seems to be a vast array of equipment available for these superb machines which leaves me a little confused at times,on the auto lights +wipers issue, are they fully auto or can they be overridden by a dashboard switch. My previous experience of these were a R*****t hire car and I would not wish to relive the horrible experience of wipers and lights doing their own thing again?

Lights are quite sensitive but you can operate them manually

wipers have adjustable sensitivity and I find them fine. but again with manual override

Lights are adjustable too for sensitivity. Needs a dealer or indy to do it.

Frankly they are both good ideas and work well under most circumstances, but can both be overirdden so pay no attention to them in the purchase decision

My previous experience of auto-wipers was on a Clio, and they were terrible. Used to go off occasionally on the driest of summer days. That being said, the one's in my coupe are great - I actually leave them on auto permanently now, but as others have already said the auto setting is just one of the options when flicking the stalk up / down.

Same with the lights, switch to the left for auto - otherwise to the right for side, dipped.

Auto wipers are more useful than auto light IMO, I wouldn't buy a Z4 without TBH.

For me i think i prefer the auto lights more... Having to use a hire car quite a lot abroad i tend to find if i am driving from daylight until its dark i tend to forget to put the lights on now (especially on the toyota's where the speedo cluster is always lit)... however if its raining i always remember to use the wipers.

The wipers in the BMW are ok... sometimes driving on motorway with spray they go mental and crazy high speed.. so i switch them to manual slow...

The auto lights work well.. but apparently work on the light frequency of daylight.. so often will be on in sunlight even.... in my Z4 i would say my car is set to auto mode 99.9% of the time.

I didnt like the speed sensing wipers as they would always slow up when in heavy rain when you pull upto a set of lights. Lights were great but when you switch cars i'd always forget to put my lights on.

I find both fully auto systems work well but are a bit pointless really, they wouldn’t feature in a buying decision for me and I would never specify them as extra cost from new. You turn your lights on once a journey! and I'm happy with the variable intermittent wipers.

Search the threads and you will see some people have problems with both systems and end up messing around with sensors etc, given thier marginal value I would rather have less to go wrong.
