Auto light sensor problems ?

Have done a search and read through the various threads where people have had an air bubble appear which prevents the auto wipers working. However I have no visible air bubbles and my auto wipers are working fine, however my headlights have decided to stay lit even in the brightest of sunshine or if I shine a torch directly onto the sensor.

Anyone else had a simillar problem ?

My car`s under AUC warranty but the dealer`s 30 miles away and invariably it`ll be a trip to diagnose then another trip to fix with 2 mornings off work, the sensors are £30ish on Ebay and I expect about £70ish brand new and are easy enough to remove/replace (talking about the electronic box not the piece stuck to the W/screen), so if it`s just a case of fitting a new box I`d rather do it myself and know it`s been done without breaking anything else (it would be great to have a good dealership on my doorstep).

I would not even think about touching this on a car under warranty. You could spent ages tinkering and £'s on bits that do not cure the problem. Could even be a new screen or a simple headlight sensor adjustment.

Phone the dealer, explain the issue and arrange a courtesy car from drop off until fixed.

Also worth noting the auto lights do seem to have a mind of their own not on when you would think they should be and visa versa. The dealer can adjust so as CJ says take it back to the dealer.

Can't quite remember the settings but as above, would let the dealer sort it. My ones now seem really good but on my old 3.0 they used to come on in the afternoon in summer, god knows why.

Thanks guys, I don`t think it`s a setting issue as it`s been fine up untill yesterday (but yesterday was the 1st time it`s been out since the Santa Pod show in Sept).

Looking on RealOEM it seems the wife`s X3 has the same part No for the sensor, so I`ll swap them over when I get chance and see if it`s any different. I`d rather not use the dealer unless it was something serious and had to be recovered there.

I think the light sensors go on light frequency as opposed to brightness.

For the past few weeks now in bright afternoon sunshine my headlights are on... even if i drive towards the low sun which is very bright my lights wil remain on.

Not really bugged me too much though.

Seems its the way they`re meant to be, there`s no difference with the X3 part swapped over and actually with the car`s side by side they`re both On or Off at the same time, I`ve never noticed it in other BMW`s but the Z4 has the Green lights On indicator whereas others just light up the instrument cluster.

My 03 doesn't have the green lights on indicator, just the two green indicator indicators. Must have been a facelift thing.....
